Rangel: Men Join The Army Only If They Can’t Have A “Decent Career”

Hot Air has the video:
I want to make it abundantly clear: if theres anyone who believes that these youngsters want to fight, as the Pentagon and some generals have said, you can just forget about it. No young, bright individual wants to fight just because of a bonus and just because of educational benefits. And most all of them come from communities of very, very high unemployment. If a young fella has an option of having a decent career or joining the army to fight in Iraq, you can bet your life that he would not be in Iraq.
As soon as the Democrats take control they allow people like Rangel to be their mouthpieces and just as quickly find a foot in that mouth. This quote is Rangel's explanation of why he supports the draft. One would think after the Kerry episode these idiots would be more careful in how the word things. I don't know how anyone could interpret Rangel's statement as anything other than a direct insult to those serving in our military. Apparently, Rangel does not believe being in the army is a decent career. Many people in the military do make the choice to join because of a conviction to a patriotic duty. Those are the kind of people I want in our military. If we were to follow Rangel's advice of a draft our military would be full of people that do not want to be there.

An idiot who can't find a "decent career" usually ends up becoming a freeloading politician.Chuck Schumer's life illustrates your point very nicely.
Chuck wants to be on the Supreme Court, but didn't want to go through the challenges of using his degree to practice law.

I can see the headlines now:
Rangel says Mother Teresa really wanted to be a housewifeUS Representative Charles Rangel (Dumb-NY) astounded listeners when he revealed his latest personally funded study, which showed that, contrary to previous findings, Mother Teresa preferred staying home and baking cookies.
As a young woman, however, she received no marriage proposals, so she was forced by the Yugoslavian government to travel to a distant country to help other people.
Rangel said that no one should challenge his findings because he is a Catholic

Rangel's district is the armpit of America. You wouldn't want to live there. Just like Nancy Pelosi fairly represents "San Francisco values", Rangel fairly represents his district's values.

Exactly, diverteach. My boy is in the Army, and if they ever want him out of he Army, they are going to have to throw him out. He loves it. He works 12 hours a day lots of days - never complains. I guess Rangel cannot understand a person having this sort of attitude toward his work.

he one the doctors and lawyers and town social leaders belong to, and ask the members how many of their kids are in the military or how many have ever encouraged their kids to join the military. My husband's roommate became a doctor. His son went to Annapolis.

How far out of the loop does a politician have to be not to be aware that Jon Cary made a complete ass of himself just a few short weeks ago with similar remarks?
Does Rangel ever read a national newspaper or have an adviser on his staff who knows or cares about anything beyond the prevailing uninformed opinion within his own ghetto supporters?
To paraphrase a remark someone once said, "Rangel was born ignorant and has been losing ground ever since."
To: syriacus
I can't put my finger on this idea yet.... but it seems that "elites" might be too broad a category. For example, at one extreme we can have low-income intellectual elites and at the other extreme we can have high income non-intellectual elites.
And then, too..
The elite liberals think every aggressive action should be solved by working harder to understand the aggressors. Liberal elites tend to be pacifists or anti-war.

It could possibly be because all the really smart folks are actually too busy making this country great. With a few notable exceptions, I would say that is unequivocal truth.
To: Jay777
Even when there was a draft and Vietnam there were many who joined the military as soon as they graduated from college. A couple were in my graduating class.
