Pombo: Noon
It's bedlam at the Tracy soccer field where Pombo stops to watch Rená, his 13-year-old daughter.
Nine games are under way simultaneously on a massive expanse of grass that Pombo helped, as a Tracy councilman, convert from a flood basin into fields.
Annette Pombo, his wife, is team mom and missing the game is not an option no matter how close the election.
And except for two journalists and an aide looking on, the campaign fades into the background for the next hour.
Between plays, Pombo, like any parent, loves to talk about his children.
Rená, pronounced Renee, is a scrappy defensive fullback. The youngest, Rachel, is a gymnast who flips a cartwheel as easily as some kids walk. And Richie, 18, is a freshman college baseball player at home for the weekend.
But the campaign is never far off: Pombo and his aide check their Blackberries constantly.
The girls tie up the game, and Pombo goes back to work.
McNerney: 1:40 p.m.
McNerney races back to the campaign office for a break and a quick visit with volunteer precinct walkers.
It's been a steady stream all day as folks roll in, pick up literature and head back out. A lot of the folks walking don't live in the district but they want to see the Democrat win.
"I'm a registered Republican so I'm specifically talking to the Republicans in the district," says Jeb Eddy of Palo Alto. "I want them to know that Republicans are not the party of fiscal responsibility and we have to get Richard Pombo out of office."

In all fairness, that sounds like a statement which could've come from me or calcowgirl or any number of Freepers. It's most definitely been true under W.
I understand Pombo wasn't a bad guy so I, for one, wouldn't be tried to get a Democrat elected in his place. However, there are plenty around these parts who champion the notion of "teaching the GOP a lesson."
