There seems to be a confusing symantical hodge podge going on here. I have always associated the term "Latino" with the language Latin and its derivatives, including Spanish, of course. All of the original ethnicites whose languages derive from Latin are Caucasion. Right?

Yes,the ORIGINAL ethnicities of Latin descent would be Caucasian but the majority of so called"Hispanics"in this country are so mixed with Indian and to a much lesser degree black,that to call most of them Caucasian would not hold water.

I wouldn't tell the average Latino that he is Caucasian!He would give you a very funny look. There are some of Spanish background that would fall in the Caucasian category.Yet most Latinos out here in California have definite Indian features that would exclude them from technically being Caucasian.

The peculiarity of the U.S. ethnic dialogue is that anybody whose parents spoke Spanish and who has a Spanish surname is labelled "Hispanic" or "Latino" be they a full-blooded Mayan Indian from the Yucatan, a mestizo from central Mexico, a black from the Dominican Republic, a mulatto from Puerto Rico or a blue-eyed caucasian from Argentina.

In Latin America, things are a little bit more precise:

White (Caucasian) = Blanco

Black = Negro

Indian = Indio

Asian = Chino

White + Negro = Mulatto

White + Indian = Mestizo

Indian + Negro = Chino

White + Mulatta = Cuarteron

White + Mestiza = Creole, only distinguished from the white by a pale brown complexion.

White + Chinese = Chino-blanco

White + Cuarterona = Quintero

White + Quintera = White

Negro + N.A. Indian = Zambo or Cariboco

Negro + S.A. Indian = Mameluco

Negro + Mulatta = Zambo-negro or Cubra

Negro + Mestiza = Mulatto-oscuro

Negro + Chinese Zambo-chino

Negro + Zamba = Zambo-negro (perfectly black.)

Negro + Cuarterona = Mulatto (rather dark.)

Negro + Quinterona = Pardoc

Indian + Mulatta = Chino-oscuro

Indian + Mestiza = Mestizo-claro

Indian + China = Chino-cholo

Indian + Zamba = Zambo-claro

Indian + China-cholo = Indian

Indian + Cuarterona = Mestizo (rather brown.)

Indian + Quintera = Mestizo

Mulatto + Zamba = Zambo

Mulatto + Mestiza = Chino (of rather clear complexion.)

Mulatto + China = Chino (rather dark.)

I filed some papers at a Federal courthouse (NYC) last year, and had to go to 3 different offices. There were at least 50-60 Federal employees working at different levels, worker bee, clerical, managerial. To a person they were all black. Perhaps 2 or 3 Hispanic. Not a single white face. How does that happen?

It's based on a Hispanic scholarship at the school that requres the applicants to be at least 25% Hispanic...

My daughter graduated in in the top 5% of her graduating class from a San Antonio high school in 1984. One of her classmates, from a fairly well-off family--Caucasian father and Hispanic mother, both working in high-paying jobs--graduated in the top 25% of the same class. Guess which one got a Presidential scholarship--full free ride--to Texas A&M. One clue, there are no identifiable minorities in my family.

After most of my lifetime (67 years) hearing ads for the Black College Fund, I find this is long overdue.

Funny how they all say they believe in "equal rights" but when someone puts this into motion, they cannot cry loud enough.

I love the idea of Whites Only scholarships. Where do I send some $$$???
