Candidate loses by 1M, but seeks recount

Wed Nov 22, 9:29 PM ET

LaPORTE, Ind. - A Libertarian candidate who lost to U.S. Sen. Dick Lugar by more than 1 million votes in the Nov. 7 election has asked for a recount in 10 precincts.

Steve Osborn, who lives in LaPorte County's Scipio Township, filed a petition Tuesday with the Indiana Recount Commission seeking the recounts in precincts in Howard, LaPorte, Porter and St. Joseph counties.

Osborn, who ran for Congress twice before, received 168,773 votes — about 13 percent of the vote — compared with 1,171,256 for Lugar, who won his sixth term in the Senate. Lugar is so popular that Indiana Democrats did not field a candidate this year to challenge him.

Osborn had little to say Tuesday about why he's seeking the recount in the 10 precincts.

"I'll have more comments after the counts are done," he told The Times of Munster.

In his petition, Osborn included the $100 bond the state requires to recount 10 precincts, along with an extra $30 for postage costs. Additional recount costs would fall to taxpayers, and the state spent roughly $100,000 to retally a congressional race two years ago.

The Indiana Recount Commission must agree to certify Osborn's petition.

Kristi Robertson, the Democratic co-director of the Indiana Election Commission, said the recount commission will proceed with Osborn's request unless an attorney for Lugar's office files a counterpetition seeking to block it.

Lugar's campaign office had no comment on the recount.

In filing his petition, Osborn made no mention of why he is seeking it, she said.

"He's filed the petition, he's paid the fee that he's supposed to pay with it, so it's definitely on our list now to go forward with," Robertson said.

Messages seeking comment were left Wednesday for Osborn.

How nice of the "libertarian" to spend taxpayer money on a recount he has zero chance of winning.

Something else is going on here. I'm not sure what, but something.

He probably has evidence that he received more votes in these precincts than reported.

Possibly. The guy has singled out specific areas.

But I'm leaning towards thinking that the guy wants to extend his 15 minutes of fame just a little longer.

For those who were blaming libertarians for the Republicans' loss...

The libertarians also funded John Kerry's recount in Ohio.

The libertarians were gloating after the election how they punished the republicans.

There main goals are to defeat republicans and elect democrats in close races.

They also look to have crazy recounts in states with close elections like 04 to tip the election to the democrat.

In Kerry's recount the libertarians alligned themselves with the moonbat in ohio to get him into the oval office.

The libertarians are con artists. They run on fiscal responsibility but then waste money on recounts.

The libertarians should stop trying to fool the public and instead run as democrats. There goal is to get democrats elected. Instead they run under a conservative platform to split up the republican vote.

Thanks to the libertarians we have people like harry reid in the senate. The libertarian saved him in a close senate race.

The libertarians also didn't do conrad burns any favor this time. Libertarian got almost four times more votes than the vote margin.

Thanks to the libertarian party we will now have no conservative judges and can have more votes like kelo.

I take it you don't agree with libertarianism. That's quite a list of scapegoating you've got there.

just seems to be identifying the fact that democrats have good useful idiots in the libertarians.

"I take it you don't agree with libertarianism..."

Well, there's "libertarianism" (which I'm pretty much for) and then there're "Libertarians," who all seem to aspire to look like Tycho Brahe...

As the Dems are finding out, it's lots more fun to be out of power flinging mud at those who are in power than to actually have to start finding solutions for stuff. Lucky for the LP, they'll never have to grow up.

If you choose to call these people idiots. I consider the R base that sat home to be far more idiotic. Scapegoats don't accomplish much in the area of progress.

I know what's going on. The guy is having a mental episode, he needs his meds re-evaluated. So do 168,773 other people apparently...

"I consider the R base that sat home to be far more idiotic." Doesn't look like they sat home to me. It looks like they voted libertarian, electing Democrats as a result.

That's interesting. You blame third party voters. I voted straight R myself but I can't seem to condemn people for voting their own conscience.

Not if I lost by a million votes. It would be pointless, and a waste of taxpayers money, something libertarians claim they are against.
I guess libertarians are only against others wasting taxpayers money, but when given an opportunity to dwindle the treasury, they are the same as any other politician, which makes voting libertarian redundant.
