Years ago when AIDS was first becoming a prevalent news topic I read in a magazine (want to say it was either Times or one of those other magazines you find in doctor's offices) that the hypothesis was AIDS originated in Africa where it was transmitted from a monkey to a human.

I don't read that much about AIDS anymore so have no idea whether the hypothesis has been disproved or not.
