NEW YORK (CNN) -- The Rev. Al Sharpton said Wednesday he refused to accept an apology from actor Michael Richards, who spouted a racist rant at a comedy club last week.
But Sharpton said he did agree to meet with Richards to try to start a process to address racism in America.
"I [told Richards] you need to sit down and deal with this," Sharpton told CNN. "This is not about accepting an apology, this is about starting a process to really deal with the continual problem of racism in this country." (Watch Richards' meltdown on stage -- 1:39 )
Sharpton said he got the call from Richards earlier Wednesday.
"I think that what he did was so injurious that he has to sit down with a group and decide how he tries to ... deal with healing the obvious problem he's got in his own mind and his own heart, because it couldn't come out of you if it wasn't in you," Sharpton said.
The incident took place Friday night at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles, California.
In a video clip posted on the celebrity gossip Web site TMZ.com, obtained from an audience member, Richards unleashed a nearly three-minute tirade punctuated by racial slurs at a group of African-American hecklers.
In it, he made a reference to lynching and added shortly before walking offstage, "That's what happens when you interrupt a white man."
TMZ.com is a subsidiary of Time Warner, as is CNN.
Richards apologized Monday on CBS's "Late Show" with David Letterman, saying he is not a racist.
"I was at a comedy club trying to do my act and I got heckled, and I took it badly and went into a rage," said Richards, who appeared on the show via satellite.

Speaking of problems in mind and heart, what about inciting blacks to kill Jews, Mr. Sharpton? Hmmm?
That, of course, is what a normal, intelligent, healthy, rational and logical person would do. Problem is, Richards is none of these things, he's a Hollywood Liberal. So, he gets to have his career destroyed (what career that was left, at any rate) and he gets to do the Perpetual PerpWalk across the daytime liberal chat shows, telling all of the prison, deadbeat, alcoholic and Democrat viewers all about how he has a sickness inside but that sickness is prevalent across all of America, and it's the Republicans' fault. He will get polite applause and knowing nods from the hosts and he will get to keep his Hollywood Liberal friends this way and he will continue to be invited to an occasional cocktail party in West Hollywood, although perhaps not quite as many as before.
Most white people are not that insecure to give a crap about some racist calling them the "C" word.
That's the difference between Richards comments and the heckler's racism.

But I think it should be "Smart Ladies for the American People." This way, the acronym would "SLAP" lazy conservative voters off their butts and into the polling place.
hehehe! I like the acronym, but I'm afraid that it will take more than that to get any lazy Conservatives to the polls. I'm no expert at parsing poll results, but I've heard many say that at least one reason for the recent bloodbath is that many "Republican" candidates were merely RINOs, and so the Conservative base wasn't motivated to vote for them. Apparently, one "advantage" that we have now is that many of the wimpy RINOs who had been in office (and had not been supporting Conservative causes and issues) have now been voted out, and so hopefully some TRUE Republican Conservatives will step up to the plate and will win the day in 2008. It's too bad that we have to suffer two years of Democrat rule in both houses, but apparently some people have a short memory and need to reminded how very bad that can be. I voted a straight Republican ticket this last time (as I always do) and I'm not one to try to "send a message" by causing the COMPLETE OPPOSITE of what I want to get into office, but I know some people like to do this. Hopefully we can get everything straightened around again in 2008 and move America forward in a positive, pro-America direction.

Richards reaction was so over the top that I'm forced to believe that this explosion was the result of him having been heckled by mostly black people over the years. Each time it happened, his inner rage towards those of a darker persuasion built up until it erupted for all the world to see.
I can't say I fault him if that's the case. Each of us can only take so much, and now he's forced to humiliate himself further just to salvage a bit of a career to placate the likes of Al Sharpton.
This is all designed to shut up conservatives and Christians. In Canada, reading certain verses in the Bible that condemn homosexuals to hell are verboten. The government can now decide what is "free speech" and what is not. This law must go as well as the eminent domain case that went to the SCOTUS. Listen to my phone call if you want, but don't tell me what I can or can't say.

You couldn't be more right. Sharpton is a despicable crud who should be serving a long term in prison and not lecturing anybody about hate crimes. It shows the depths this country has sunk to when some oxygen thief like Sharpton is accorded any measure of respectability.
