After a yearlong tour in northern Iraq and a dangerous and controversial four-month extension in Baghdad, the 172nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team is coming home.

The 3,800-person unit is scheduled to return to Alaska in waves starting Saturday, military officials said today.

U.S. Army Alaska spokesman Maj. Kirk Gohlke said all the troops are scheduled to be home by Dec. 5. Most will be flying into Fairbanks, where the brigade is based at Fort Wainwright, he said. About 200 will return to Fort Richardson in Anchorage.

The 172nd left Alaska for Iraq in September 2005. Their departure was and remains the largest war zone deployment of Army soldiers Alaska has seen since Vietnam.

Yes, they fit the mission better then armored tracked vehicals yet are much more robust then Hummers. All in all they guys have not said much negative about them other then they don't like the bedspring around them. However, they know they need it to stop things like RPG rounds.

The daughter of a friend of ours is in that group. I'm pleased to hear they're on the way back to Alaska. I sure hope Chrissy will be able to be home for Christmas.

They got a lot of coverage here on TV, but then, they *are* stationed here.

I'll be at the Fort to welcome them home - flags and all.

Many happy smiles all around.

You point to a newspaper story to show that the news media "never mentions" such stories?

I point to a newspaper story in a local small market paper and point out how "Major News Media" never ever covering these things.

Before posting any most such obnoxious, ignorant comments, go back to an Elementary School and have them teach you basic reading comprehension. Pretty obvious you skipped it the first time around.

Give him a break, Johnnie. He hasn't been around long enough to know that you aren't supposed to point out hypocritical type posts from the bots.
