Fishing boats are reporting icebergs off the Timaru coast.
Two fishing boats - the Nidaro and the Amber Wave - have reported seeing icebergs heading north.
Nidaro skipper Blendon Laurie did more than report sightings of icebergs - he got up close enough to take a piece home to show the kids.
An iceberg appeared on the horizon while the boat was about 60 kilometres out from the Timaru coast.
"We saw it on the horizon, and weren't sure what it was, but then we saw it was an iceberg."
Mr Laurie estimated the iceberg was about 30 to 45 metres high and a good 45m across.
"It's not something you'd like to hit."

"We got half a mile away from one, we went right in for a look."
The icebergs are moving in a north to north-west direction, heading toward the peninsula, and travelling at about one nautical mile (1.85km) an hour.
National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research oceanographer Mike Williams said that the biggest iceberg sighted off the Timaru coastline was estimated at 45m high, 61m wide and 30m long.
"They're not going to be as spectacular as the ones off Dunedin, but having said that, it is close. It's unprecedented to have them this far up."
The last time icebergs were reported off New Zealand's coast was in the 1930s.
Dr Williams said it was likely those reported off the Dunedin coastline also made their way north to Timaru.
This week's sightings were estimated to be at least 30km to 40km from the coast, but Dr Williams said some of the smaller icebergs might come in closer.
I read just yesterday that undersea volcano's are likely responsible for warming waters in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. There is one particularly hot volcano in the Antartic... could that be behind the calving ice?
<< That seems like a bigger story than the icebergs. I did not even know that a fishing boat could talk. >>
Pretty darned crafty, them Kiwi fishin' boats!
This isn't news - helicopter pilots are already taking tourists for explorations.
saw it on Fox 2 nights ago.

A little known fact, but Volcanos are caused by deep sea Oil well drilling.
The oil lubricates the shifting tectonic plates, thereby reduceing earthquake activity, heat, and magma buidup.
But Krakatoa exploded before "Big Oil" came to be?
Thats when we had "Little Oil" , or what is also known as Whale Oil. Whales served the same purpose, lubricating the earths shifting plates when they died and sank into the sea floor.
Once we have a Communist government the planet should cool off to a perfect temp, as perscribed by Algore.
Take a glass of water and put an ice cube in and then mark the glass where the water level is at. After the ice cube melts you will notice that the water level hasn't changed from its orginal level.
Congratulations. Keep that up and you'll be almost smart enough to be Polish in your next life.
There was even an article recently with some clown wanting to make it a "hate crime" to be a "Global Warming Denier".
Which only betrays how dangerous these whack-jobs really are.

You sound like a TV watcher.
Two days ago the bergs were at Dunedin, of the Otago coast and Dunedin helicopter operators were carting dawks for gawks.
Now they're 120 miles north, abeam Timaru, off the Canterbury coast.
That's news.
Rove should stop sulking in the corner of his room and go turn that durned weather machine off, pronto!
<< "Global warming" worshippers .... >>
You'll find precious few of those around here. FR's boards are frequented only by conservatives. Conservatives have brains.
I was Polish in my previous life..what is your excuse?
I agree..Alot of scientists are ticked off..it is political now.
They are floating north from the south pole, does this indicate global warming or global cooling? (I am so confused)
One of our manatees managed to make his way from Florida, up the Mississippi to Memphis, TN. Unheard of.
Whatever it is maybe it's contagious. Sounds like your icebergs got it.

I believe it indicates they are floating north from Antarctica. Nothing much more.
(Except that they were perhaps either a bit bigger than usual to begin with and/or that the ocean's a bit colder than usual)

oI'm still oIrish -- Brian Boru of the Bog of Allen! (First cousin of dear departed "Dave")
I'm not departed yet.
,,, the tinkle of ice at sunset, off the coast of... Timaru. Keep it cool all the way up the coast to Castlepoint Brian and give me a yell. I'll be ready with the whitebait net.
"Ocean Patriot" is off the coast of New Plymouth drilling a 3600m hit at a probable oil deposit right now and that doesn't happen too often around here either.
