Elderly Woman Killed; 3 APD Officers Wounded In Shootout
WSB-TV (Atlanta) ^ | 11/21/06 | WSB-TV Staff

Three Atlanta police officers were shot and wounded and an elderly woman killed at a house in northwest Atlanta Tuesday night.

The woman, identified by relatives as 92-year old Kathryn Johnson, opened fire on the officers from the narcotics division at a house at 933 Neal Street, according to officials. Authorities say they received a tip of drug activity taking place at the home and officers were headed to the house with a search warrant.

The woman's niece, Sarah Dozier, says that she bought her aunt a gun to protect herself and that her aunt had a permit for the gun. Relatives believe Johnston was frightened by the officers and opened fire.

Her relatives say Johnson had lived in the house for about 17 years.

"They kicked her door down talking about drugs, there's no drugs in that house. And they realize now, they've got the wrong house," Dozier said. "I'm mad as hell." Officials say they had the correct house and that the warrant they had was legal.

Assistant Chief Alan Dreher says the officers had a legal warrant and "knocked and announced" before they forced open the door. He said they were justified in returning fire when they were fired upon.

Dozier said there were never any drugs at the house. She says her aunt must have panicked when the police forced their way into the home.

She says the officers "shot her down like a dog."

The plainclothes Atlanta Police officers were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. One officer was struck in the arm, one officer was struck in the shoulder and one officer was struck in the thigh. All are expected to recover.

What's your grudge against cops?

See the article.

The overwhelming majority of cops that I have run into are assholes. The go in, shoot 92 year-olds and then bitch when she shoots back.

If you make a dumb choice, you should go to jail!

I wasn't aware that it was our government's place to legislate stupidity.

My apologies, I was just trying to digest your statement that the undercover cop making the drug buy should be in uniform.

I'm a banker. Anytime I'm in the bank or outside the bank (except at home) doing bank work, I wear the banker's uniform (suit and tie).

Likewise with dentists, Roto-Rooter employees, burger flippers and judges.

If cops are out there doing cop work, they ought to be in uniform.

So sorry, my mistake. I've just read so many cop abuse stories lately I got confused.

I've learned my lesson and will read more carefully from now on.

Now, it is time for you to return the favor by learning to think, dumb a$$.

I wish you would say that to my brother. He is over 6ft., was a star lacrosse player, earining D1 scholarships to both West Point and UMASS. Served in the military, Special Forces. Rejoined after 9/11 and spent a year in Afghanistan when we first invaded. He is an APD detective. He was never picked on in school.

My brother was at the scene, it was not 1:00 am. It was on the 11:00 news here in Atlanta. According to my brother who was there the warrant was served at dusk. Which down here mean between 6 and 7 pm.

Watch when the real truth emerges and they find out about all the traffic that went in and out of that home. So what if she was 92, she opened fire on police officers executing a legal search warrant. TOUGH LUCK, SHE WAS STUPID!

Yeah, I saw this yesterday and I am reluctant to believe it. Let's just watch how this all pans out. Police don't just make up addresses to go shoot people, they were told to go to that address based on a statement from the witness. If it is determined at some time that this informant lied, he can be charged with murder in the 2nd. Just remember that a police official has to swear and affirm to the statements made by the informant, to a judge.
