HONOLULU -- The acting director of the White House Travel Office was robbed and beaten in Waikiki early on Tuesday morning outside a nightclub, according to Honolulu police.
Three men mugged Greg Pitts at about 2 a.m. while he was walking through the International Marketplace near Bobby G's Dance Club, police said.
Pitts accompanied President George W. Bush on a brief visit to Hawaii. The stop came after an eight-day trip to Asia.

redeploy to Iraq
sheana said :"Let's see, they had an accident on the road into Hickum and now this....they better just declare Hawaii a quagmire and leave."
redeploy to Iraq
It depends on the area of Oahu. Duke's is infamous for sometimes having some violent fights and stuff. There is some violence with locals and the military.
damn, Hawaii's become just another neo-imperialist quagmire.... time to re-deploy to Okinawa!!
Dog the Bounty Hunter ain't in business for no reason.
Lesseeee, high cost tourist area, lotsa money, many foreign visitors, many many "'hard working' Democrate poor" in the area, you figure it out. "Dog" isn't based there for nuthin'!
Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!
Maybe he just likes getting beat up.
Akaka hit gang!
OMG! A Brady Bunch reference on FReeper. Who woulda thunk it?
"Same thing happened to me on a Waikiki beach access walkway around 11 pm."
Me too. Accept slightly different. After I cold-cocked the victim, purely randmom, I liked his shirt, I took his cash and ironman watch. Someone later said the dude woke up in a hospital not knowing what the heck happened.
Up untill now.
I want my watch back.
That's pretty surprising. Over the past few years, I have also been to Wakiki beach a few times after hitting the bars and walked to the hotel. Never had any problems. Maybe he shouldn't have been walking alone.
Holy cow....the Brady tiki bad luck thingy....... I thought that last neuron was dead.
Report: First Daughter Barbara Bush Robbed
First Daughter Barbara Bush had her purse and cell phone stolen as she had dinner in a restaurant in Buenos Aires, Argentina, even though she was being guarded by a detail of Secret Service agents, according to law enforcement reports made available to ABC News.
It was not the only mishap on the two-week trip to Argentina by Barbara (right) and her twin sister Jenna (left).
A Secret Service agent on the advance detail got into an "altercation" with someone after a night out and was badly beaten, according to the law enforcement reports. The Secret Service said today the incident was an attempted mugging that occurred while the agent was on his own time. The agent is doing fine.
The purse snatching took place on Barbara's first night in town while she was dining in the picturesque San Telmo neighborhood. According to the reports, the Secret Service agents failed to notice the incident.
The Secret Service would not comment on the purse snatching, and the First Ladys office said they would not comment on any personal trip made by the daughters. There have been recent reports, however, that Jenna Bush has been living and working in Panama as an intern for UNICEF.
Tourism even in the nicest places can bring the predators out of the woodwork.
Not just because tourists are known to carry lots of cash, but because they tend to let their guard down and aren't likely to return months later to ID their attackers in court.
My first reaction as well.
At 2 am, I wouldn't want to be a drunken single person walking around that looks like they have dough. That particular area is usually OK, but as you get closer to Kapiolani park late at night, it can be dicey.
The end of July there was the end of a large naval exercise at Pearl Harbor as well as a big hawaiian music festival on saturday night that made for a busy night for the local police and shore patrol.
Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner!
You're both wrong. I covered the White House for two years for the Washington Times. Greg Pitts is a good guy. He would never be out cruising for girls he would pay for, guys or drugs. And he would never do anything to embarass the President.
He's a hard-working guy in his late 20s, who works 13-18 hour days sometimes as much as 7 days a week. If the guy wants a beer when he finally gets off the clock, good for him. I've had a beer with him in Waco and on a couple of foreign trips.
Just for your information, so there's no jumping to conclusions. I'd hope someone would be a little more sympatheic if someone found you lying in a pool of blood.
