G. Roger Crowningshield, a gemologist who helped revolutionize methods for judging the quality of precious stones and for spotting fakes, died on Nov. 8 in Hightstown, N.J. He was 87.

He lived on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

His death was confirmed by a spokesman from the Gemological Institute of America; Mr. Crowningshield had been a fixture in the institute’s Manhattan laboratory since 1949, introducing ever more exacting methods for defining the color, cut and clarity of gems.

Not to be confused with Frank Crowninshield who fired Dorothy Parker from Vanity Fair.

"He hoped she would work at home and do little pieces in her spare time. She said she really couldn't. She had no idea how to change a typewriter ribbon."

His grave was dug in a drop-cut fashion, and marked with one large quartz stone, hand crafted and etched, surrounded by seven small stones.

Roger was laid next to his wife Ruby and his daughters Pearl and Opal.
