At a news conference Monday, Pelosi slapped down the idea of a draft offered by Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., the incoming House Ways and Means Committee chairman, which has little support in Congress, the military or the public. But she did so with a light touch, praising Rangel for raising questions about the fairness of who serves.
"It's not about a draft, it's about shared sacrifice in our country," Pelosi said, adding that Rangel's proposal is "a way to make the point about this war, that it has not involved any shared sacrifice."
It was a sign of Pelosi's political pragmatism -- showcasing her party's criticism of Bush's handling of the war while avoiding the suggestion that Democrats are ready to send more young people off to fight and die.
Another sign was appearing side by side before the TV cameras on Monday with Maryland Rep. Steny Hoyer, who trounced Pelosi's choice for House majority leader last week, a nasty fight that Capitol insiders viewed as a mistake on her part. Pelosi downplayed the rift by heaping praise on Hoyer -- who held the Democrats' No. 2 post to Pelosi the past four years -- for his "stunning victory" and pledging to work as a team.
"Mr. Hoyer will be leading the action on the floor," she said, with a big smile.
Hoyer and Pelosi know it is best to show a united front,

Well, Nancy Pelosi went eyeball-to-eyeball with Charlie Rangal, and she didn't blink.
There seems to be more than just natural shadowing above her upper eyelids. It's extremely dark.
