Is Your Newspaper America's Worst?
Powerline Blog ^ | 11/20/06 | John Hinderaker

Scott (Johnson) recently suggested that the Minneapolis Star Tribune may be America's worst newspaper. That produced lots of emails from readers who nominated their own newspapers, or others with which they are familiar, for the honor. This gave us the idea for a new poll: What is the worst newspaper in the United States?

Here are the nominees, with commentary by those who nominated them:

The Minneapolis Star Tribune: Nominated by Scott, citing Mark Steyn: “Unreadable sludge.”

The Houston Chronicle: A reader who worked for the Chronicle for “quite a while”: “Its main problem is not even its liberalism, which it suffers from, but its vapidity. On top of that, the editor from Hearst Corp. is trying to teach Houstonians how to be proper liberals. The fact that no one ever hears about the newspaper at America’s fourth largest city should tell you a lot.”

The Olympian (Olympia, Washington): MHJ: “From their editorial about how good it is that the Governor is going to direct the employees of the State Department of Transportation to cooperate with the State Auditor on taxpayer-directed performance audits, to their choice of letters to the editor, the Olympian begs for an editorial staff with common sense and analytical skills.”

I don't know how you can get any lower than the Houston Chronicle.

Nothing compares to the Denver Post. "News" articles are commonly edited, placed, titled, and formatted so as to deceive and manipulate the reader's thought processes for political purposes. This paper is a classic example of pure propaganda.

The San Jose Murky News well and truly sucks.

Poorly reported, poorly written -- a journalistic sub-mediocrity.

Besides the obvious horror of that New York Times rag, my local paper, The Bergen Record, is definitely one of the worst.

About a year or two after every election, this pile of printed toilet paper has the nerve to rail against the corruption of the New Jersey Democrats in office. Then, in the months before the next election, they completely forget every complaint that they ever had, and print nothing but positive glowing stories about all the great things the Democrats are getting done, and just as importantly, all the horrible things they are doing their level best to prevent the ineffectual state GOP from accomplishing.

Then they endorse all the Democrats heartily for reelection, then a year or two later, they express horror at all the corruption they are witnessing.

Rinse. Lather. Repeat.

The Denver Post: Biased news, only liberal national columnists (two local non-liberals vs. several libs), hateful cartoonist, and even the comic pages have been adding totally stupid strips.

The Star Tribune single-handedly got the first ever muslim elected to the US congress, Keith Ellison. And they couldn't be more snarky about it.

I have always been interested in small local/regional papers. When we travel, I always buy the local rag to read with breakfast or lunch. It gives you a real insight into the local stuff, plus editorial policy & more than once, I have been surprised how good the writing comes across.

On the opposite however, the Frederick, MD News-Post HAS to be one of the absolute worst for a medium sized city. The writing is sophomoric, the editorials are mostly weak and silly and it never fails to amaze me just how bad it gets.

The Comical is impressive in its total lack of impressiveness.

> How can any paper be any worse than the New York Times. unless its the Washington post? <

I never read the NYT. I do buy the WaPo on Fridays for their weekend entertainment supplement, and usually I take a peek at the rest of the rag. As a result, I have to say that although their news pages almost always tilt towards a conventionally "liberal" world view, they aren't by any means "progressives" of the far-left persuasion. What's more, their Op Ed page isn't at all bad.

Still, the WaPo is truly disgraceful due to their treasonous disclosure of national security secrets -- in wartime, no less. On that score, I guess it's impossible to judge whether the WaPo or the NYT is the greater traitor. But if I were in charge of the nation's justice system, I'd have them both under indictment.

The red Star Tribune is the worst. According to the NYT, the Star Tribune is a 'goofy, new age and politically correct' paper - high praise indeed. According to me, it could be vastly improved if they only made it softer.

Okay, so the Houston Chronicle even puts lefty columnists in its Lifestyle section to coach us on diversity matters.

That does not detract from the fact that they carry a lot of good comics!

And they carry some great furniture ads!

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal publishes 'doonesberry' in the regular comics, whereas, 'Dilbert' is in the business section.

And, of course, you know full well how they defended Keith Ellison against those who were concerned about his past ties to the nation of islam, while crucifying Michele Bachmann for merely being a Christian.

Yesterday their lefty editorial cartoonist ripped Fox News Channel for the OJ interview, even though it was never going to be carried on FNC.

Did I mention they carry good comic strips?
