2 Days in row, 2 separate pit bull attacks in the same town of Boca Raton, FL happened last week. Pit BUlls and Rotties--NO MATTER HOW THEY WERE BROUGHT UP....cannot be trusted...ever. They are prone to "SNAPPING". It's something like working for the post office. :>
That must mean you, because no where in this article did I see the word *science* and for you to *assume* it....
See my home page for the salviating, rip-your-throat open Patches who WILL kill you if you look at her wrong. (Do I have to indicate that I'm being sarcastic here, people?)
Well behaved pit bulls, just like any other dog, deserve to be rescued and given a good home. Ours was attacked by another dog and left to die. When we got her, she became part of our family. My mom was terrified that we had a pit bull in our home, because of all the stories you hear. Then she met ours, and she's no longer afraid.
I read that pit bulls actually got their name b/c in England (I think it was) people would breed them for killing in "pit sports."
They would dig huge pits and put the dog down in it. Then they would release hundreds of rats into the pit and bet on how many the dog could kill in a given time.
They specifically bred them for larger and larger and more and more powerful jaws and an aggressive temperament.
I have the same reaction when I see the ads in our paper.
I think it's just one more tragedy waiting to happen.
Exactly.
Causation vs correlation error shown here. I believe a more accurate title should be "Criminals prefer pitt bulls over other breeds"
study of 355 dog owners in Ohio showed that every owner of a high-risk breed known for aggression had at least one brush with the law, from traffic citations to serious criminal convictions.
So if you own a pitt bull type of dog and you get a speeding ticket, you are labeled a criminal owner of a pitt bull. Sounds more like propaganda to me.
Many laws restrict freedoms based on one's status as a criminal, e.g., felons cannot vote or own a gun
I think there are circumstances where the same logic should be applied to pit bulls.
I know people will cry "don't punish the dog for the owner's stupidity."
Sorry, there are zillions of dogs in the world. Get one from a breed that does not regularly kill people and other animals.
OK, it's actually a Jack Russell mix. (But he thinks he's a pit bull).
Freedom is doing just fine. You are free to own any dog you want and I am free to have an opinion about you.
Upon what do you base your apparent conclusion that social deviants are not more likely to own pit bulls than are people who are not social deviants? Science, please.
With the passion that people have for dogs, I have always been impressed with the fact that dog breed bans have been able to pass anywhere.
It convinces me that there is a problem with some breeds and even dog overs (or maybe especially dog lovers) know it. Otherwise the wails going up from the dog lover community would make these laws politically impossible.
If a breed is shown all over the world to have a greater propensity than other breeds to kill people and animals, with all the dogs in the world to choose from, why would it be such an imposition to protect the rest of us from these killers?
> You have no idea what you are talking about. There are dog ban breeds across this country and in Europe.
Do you live in one of those places? If so, I suggest you live elsewhere if it's that important to you. Consider:
I'm not overly concerned because some states, or some cities within states, or some European countries, ban certain breeds of dogs. Did you know that England has firearm bans? Does that mean they're coming for my guns? No, I live in Upstate NY. For a reason.
In some places, there are laws restricting whether you can have a rusted-out car up on blocks in the front yard. But not where I live, in an unzoned, rural area.
I choose not to live in a neighborhood where the local association restricts my right to have foot-tall weeds in my yard. Does the fact that others live in more restrictive neighborhoods limit _my_ freedom? No.
What I meant by "No one is coming after your dog" was, you have the freedom to choose where you live, and can pick a place based on the prevailing local and state laws -- that's a concept central to the US Constitution. If you live in a place that does not allow your kind of dog, and it matters to you, you should lobby for a change in the law, or move.
You're demanding that there be no restrictions on dog breeds _anywhere_. That's not reasonable, any more so than me demanding the right to keep a rusted-out hulk in a manicured-lawn gated community in Reston, VA. Ummm, nope.
Oops - "dog overs" = "dog lovers"
My freedom is jeopardized when I can't take my kids to the local dog park b/c some yahoo is there with his brute.
We literally have a few owners/dogs who regularly clear the park, and I mean clear it completely. When they show up, you suddenly see 25-50 people gathering their dogs up and working their way to the gate.
It's sad, but necessary.
One day a woman actually called the park ranger b/c a pit bull had come in to the park and immediately went and knocked an elderly lady who was standing about 100 feet away to the ground. After a dispute the owner finally left with the pit bull; in the meantime, the ranger came.
The ranger said pit bulls were a big problem in all the city dog parks and, for now, the best thing to do is leave when they are brought in.
Of course, the elderly lady who was standing there, far away and with her back to the dog, didn't have a chance to leave before we all got the scare of our lives.
You need a pit bull to keep the other thugs from stealing your drugs!
This is the problem with pits. Even when they are properly socialized, they can go off at any moment. And as a law enforcement officer once said, they are built to kill. Their jaws can do tremendous damage in a very short period of time.
Your story makes me decide to be even more cautious about this.
