Funny how the Dems did not mention during the campaign that reinstating the draft would be a number one priority.

"There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way..."

And so what is the point here? I bet they would not have voted for WWII if women could have been drafted. So what?

Charlie says this all the time, but then he knows most of his draft-age male constituents are either in prison or too stupid to pass the mental exams.

Rangel doesn't care about the draft. He believes that a draft would bring about public discontent, a la Vietnam war protests, forcing the U.S. to withdraw from conflict.

QUESTION TO MR. RANGEL AND THE FEMINISTS :

If Rangel's idea pushes through...

Now that Women are considered just as good as men in the military and allowed in combat, will this be an EQUAL OPPORTUNITY DRAFT ? Or will it only apply UNEQUALLY to men ?

Sure they would have. WMD threat? Remember? Besides those of us who lived back in those days remember a thing called "deferrment". Rangel's ploy will go nowhere.

I actually agree with Rangel on this, but of course he's being disingenous. The only reason he'll sponsor the bill is to put Republicans on the spot for 2008. If Republicans support it move-on.org and the Soros-funded Vietnam era anti-war bunch will go into full scream. If Pubbies oppose it Rangel and his like-minded insincere "patriots" will go into full scream. This is all political theater, not patriotism. Rangel has a good war record but he's a Democrap politician first and foremost.

Re-instating the draft is a great way to turn Americans against going to war in Iraq or anywhere else. It's one thing if someone volunteers to join up, but it's an entirely different matter to be forced or to think it could happen to you or your kids.

Oh, so now Rangel is a hawk who wants to go kick butt in Iran and North Korea, eh? But... but... THEY didn't attack us on 9/11!! And that's our only criteria for war now, far as I can tell...

Yet the prospect of the long global fight against terrorism and the continuing U.S. commitment to stabilizing Iraq have kept the idea in the public's mind.

It has ???

This is not in quotes, so I assume it is the opinion of, John Heilprin, the writer of the article.

Nice subtle way of injecting an opinion, not a fact.

Bring it on, Charlie. It'll be the Democrats' kids who protest and go to Canada.

We should have had the draft reinstated in Sept 01, and it should have included women.

A BAD idea. As a military member, I only want people who want to stand next to me during war. It is too dangerous to have people who are forced to be in the military. It would be a disaster if this is implemented. Graham is getting more and more of my contempt. I have tried to keep an open mind to his craziness especially since I have no say in his state, but he seems to be getting worse. Please don't allow this to happen!!!!

Why don't these stories ever mention the fact that when this nutjob introduced this before, he voted AGAINST it when it came to a vote? Yeesh!

And he's all over the board on all of this stuff. He voted FOR the use of force in Iraq...before he voted against it! Double Yeesh!

The reason the draft is a winner is that you can pay draftees $78 per month. That makes the war a lot cheaper to fight.

He said having a draft would not necessarily mean everyone called to duty would have to serve. Instead, "young people (would) commit themselves to a couple of years in service to this great republic, whether it's our seaports, our airports, in schools, in hospitals," with a promise of educational benefits at the end of service.

Bottom line, a sneaky and very creative new form of welfare.
This guy is a Socialist's socialist!

The only group more useless than a regular government bureaucracy, is a do-nothing welfare program masquerading as a "service" bureaucracy.

Incompetence legitemized forever...
