Democrats demand CIA detainee documents

By LAURIE KELLMAN, Associated Press Writer 53 minutes ago

A Senate Democrat who will chair its Judiciary Committee next year asked the Justice Department to release newly acknowledged documents setting U.S. policy on how suspects in the war on terrorism are detained and interrogated.

"The American people deserve to have detailed and accurate information about the role of the Bush administration in developing the interrogation policies and practices that have engendered such deep criticism and concern at home and around the world," Sen. Patrick Leahy (news, bio, voting record), D-Vt., wrote Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Leahy demanded two documents whose existence the CIA recently acknowledged in response to a lawsuit by the American Civil Liberties Union.

"If President Bush and the Justice Department authorized the CIA to torture its prisoners, the public has a right to know," said Jameel Jaffer, an ACLU attorney involved in the case.

The first document is a directive Bush signed giving the CIA authority to set up detention facilities outside the U.S. and outlining interrogation methods that may be used against detainees.

The second is a 2002 memo from the Justice Department's office of Legal Counsel to the CIA General Counsel regarding interrogation methods that the spy agency may use against top al Qaida members.

While I'm quite disappointed in G.W. at this moment, he'll hand Leahy a number 10 can of STFU.

President Bush is a social enigma, but he will not be cowtowed on securty and the fight against the Islamo-Rag-Wearing Fascists.

the MSM will take selected parts of this, and blow it upinto "torture" stories.

Bush & Gonzalez can classify these documents, which the Dems obviously want to use as a political weapon, and then let the ACLU try to sue to declassify them. I don't think the lefty ACLU lawyers will get very far with that lawsuit. The Executive Branch has the authority and the legal right to decide what materials are classified as secret for national security reasons. I don't think congress can do anything to force release of classified materials. So Leahy can go back to his little partisan playpen and pound sand.

("President Bush is a social enigma, but he will not be cowtowed on securty and the fight against the Islamo-Rag-Wearing Fascists. ")

The southern border of our country is being invaded. WE do not know who these people are . They are being let go..catch and release...remember when W said that policy has stopped. He just ignored his base because he did not need us anymore. Now it is "blind border guard" unless you want to do 12 years in federal prison. SECURITY?? FOR WHOM???

The WH continously undermined the conservatives in congress by making deals with Teddy K and other dems about education and amnesty. The Rummy thing was the last straw . Bush was huge errors on amnesty and every he made those dumb statements like ; they just doing the work american won't do , the rnc pollsters said the rnc in congress lost thousands of blue collar voters . Bush was considered the plague in the midwest rust belt.

Naw, string them a long for a little while... let them whip themselves into a fever pitch and then turn over the documents.

But when you do, turn over all the information obtained from using those methods and identify how many attacks were foiled and lives saved because of them. Put it out for every one to read.

Then sit back and watch the Dem's stew in the bed of their own making.

Classic strategery.

No need to shred anything. Just classify the documents as secret, if they aren't already classified. These materials should be classified because it's vital not to release details of how we interrogate terror suspects. If we're trying to locate some WMD heading for America some day, we don't want the terror suspects to know what to expect in an interrogation. If they can prepare mentally for the interrogation, then our methods are less effective.

This should not be a difficult witch hunt to stop by legitimately classifying these documents under national security laws. Leahy can whine and bitch all he wants but he still won't get his witch hunt.

I'm wondering...is there a single state in this country that has a Congressional delegation that is filthier than that of Vermont?

IF there is, I don't know of one and that is one of the primary reasons I moved (away) last year--that and my being tired of being one of only 15 Conservatives out of a population of 600,000.

First there was "Jumpin" Jim Jeffords. Then the only avowed Socialist in Congress, Bernie Sanders and of course, Sen. Depends, Leahy.

I won't even mention Howie the clown Dean.

Vermont, one of the 10 most liberal states in the Country!!!

Anyone want to take me up on that assertion?

Will somebody please tell the Republican Congress to stand up and tell Leahy the Democrats do not take power until January? Is there not one man in the Republican Congress?

Not a bad strategy there, except the dishonest left-wing media would fail to report on how many attacks were foiled and lives saved. We've reach the point where the MSM doesn't even make a token attempt to appear to be unbiasd on key political stories. They would slant this so hard in favor of the Democrats that you wouldn't even recognize the original response from the White House.

Re-read "social enigma", which include border security.

I referenced Islamo fascists.

AG Alberto Gonzales reply should be:

"According to our records, Senator, you do not possess the security clearance required to see and review such documents. Moreover, as long as you and other members of the Judiciary do not possess the proper clearances, then no documents will be shared.

I am certain, Senator, you know the rules concerning attempting to gain access to classified documents without proper authorization. You and the members of the Judiciary are being formally notified that such attempts will be viewed as clear violations of law in regards to maintaining and securing classified documents and will be prosecuted to fullest extent."

--Listen, don't blame Leahy, blame the people of Vermont.--

It's a large-scale gerrymander in progress. More socialists in Vermont & Oregon means there are fewer of them to mess up states such as New Hampshire & California.
