Mr. Hevesi, in a statement issued by his office in response to questions for this article, said, "Honest concern for my wife led me to make a mistake for which I have apologized. "Knowing the facts, millions of New Yorkers elected me by an overwhelming percentage to serve another four year term as comptroller," he said. "That is what I intend to do." ...If the Senate removed Mr. Hevesi, the governor would choose his successor. But if Mr. Hevesi resigned, the Legislature as a whole would choose his replacement, giving control to the Democrats. Mr. Hevesi had been somewhat buoyed by his re-election last week, when he handily beat a largely unknown candidate. Whether he would submit to a trial in the Senate is unclear, and many people in Albany expect him to resign first.

Big deal. Hevesi was elected anyway and he will just be replaced by someone even worse.
Governor-elect Spitzer (D) is the NY att'y general who can't let Hevesi continue and chooses to take his pain early. I think he'll wind up labelled a DINO by the dwindling MoveOn wing of the Dhimmicrats, and wind up costing them the White House in 2008. But you know how I get. ;')
Why Is George Pataki Undercutting the GOP?

"...Pataki needed to say the words, 'He must go now' - so that underdog Chris Callaghan can win as controller, but he can't bring himself to say it since he would no longer be in the spotlight. The damage that Pataki continues to do to the New York State GOP is unbelievable! The RNC is giving Callaghan money so he may actually win. However, there are still New Yorkers, especially in the People's Republic of NYC, who would rather die than vote for a Republican."

If he proceeds as he says he will, I will have more respect for Spitzer than any other NY Democrat. That's not much of an accomplishment considering the competition (Cuomo, Hillary, Schumer, Rangel, etc.), but it's something.
If his wife was receiving "death threats," why didn't he call the police? Hmmmmmm?
If Spitzer ousts Hevesi, then Spizer is done as a democRAT. The real power in NY is Sheldon Silver D-Manhattan, the Assembly Majority leader.
Silver supports Hevesi. Expect Spitzer to make a certain amount of noise but nothing will come of it, it's just for show.
Thanks! Excellent observation.
This is something Spitzer should do.
I feel the same way.
Spitzer and Hevesi. Just more reasons why Upstate needs its own state.
