Arctic resists warming RESEARCHERS: New patterns of cooling ocean currents, winds suggest region is struggling to keep its balance.
By ROBERT LEE HOTZ Los Angeles Times
(Published: November 17, 2006) An international team of scientists reported Thursday that rising temperatures are steadily transforming the Arctic -- warming millions of square miles of permafrost, promoting lush greenery on previously arid tundras and steadily shrinking the annual sea ice.
Yet the researchers also found new patterns of cooling ocean currents and prevailing winds that suggested the Arctic, long considered a bellwether of global warming, may be reverting in some ways to more normal conditions not seen since the 1970s.
Taken together, these findings may be evidence, the researchers said, of the region struggling to keep its balance, as rising temperatures slowly overturn the long-established order of seasonal variations.
"This is a region that is fighting back," said lead author Jacqueline Richter-Menge, a civil engineer at the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory in Hanover, N.H. "There are things that showed signs of going back to norms, trying to right themselves under very dire circumstances."

Obviously they were referring to Gaia, the all encompassing spirit of the earth, also costar of Captain Planet.
How do inanimate objects "struggle"?
STRUGGLING TO KEEP ITS BALANCE???
What on earth is that supposed to mean?
Other than: We're not seeing the predicted global warming in the Arctic.
You're correct that "anthromorphism (......the attribution of human characteristics.....to such things as objects, the forces of nature......") hits the nail on the head
Hence, "the Arctic fights back....." and "the Arctic resists.....".
ASOC to the "ism" rescue!

Oct here in the sub-arctic was below average temperature. Nov so far is way below average temperature. This isn't the Arctic, of course, merely next-door to the Arctic.
The Department of Energy ENERGY STAR Change a Light pledge drive ended on October 31.
I challenged all the departmental organizations to encourage their staffs to sign a pledge to change an incandescent light bulb to an Energy Star labeled compact fluorescent lightbulb. I am pleased to announce that the Office of Science drove the most pledges to the Change a Light site! Congratulations DOE Office of Science.
The Department of Energy is pleased to announce that DOE employees have made 8138 pledges during the one month campaign. Changing a bulb might seem like a small thing, but together we can make a huge difference for our utility bills, environment and national security.
8138 changed light bulbs will mean:
2,295,000 kWh saved which is enough energy to light 1,093 homes for one year!
3,626,000 lbs of greenhouse gas emissions avoided, (Your efforts will result in the environmental equivalent of removing 57 cars from the road.), and
$229, 500 in electricity costs saved
It's not too late: If you have not yet taken the pledge, please do so at:
http://www.energy.gov/pledge.htmpledge.energy.gov
Thank you all for your support for energy efficiency!
Don't confuse the global warming dogma with facts...
Great link - thanks!
"In other news; it's been reported that the Sahara resists cooling."
In other news, Part 2:
The Florida Everglades resists the onslaught of alligators and air-boats.
No rescue attempt ; )
Animism was not a bad choice, it just carries a religious overtone.
And given the Left, where Gaia Syndrome passes for some as a personal religion.....
I just thought anthromorphism might be the better pick, as the article did not seem to have religious overtones, only bad writing.
I got lucky on a slow and cold morning, Friday being free for me.
Have fun, life has so much to enjoy.
LOL
And Philip K. Dick was just the sort of winging lefty who would be very concerned about man made global warming.
These spirits became converted to Buddhism and thus became helpers of the monks. This was a deliberate policy on the part of King Anawratha and the rulers of Burma in the 11th century.
At the same time, these spirits often have their own ceremonies and festivals and are worshipped in addition to the Buddha. There are 37 officially recognized Nats, each with its own history and image.
The Nats, as spirits of natural forces, such as water, wind, stones and trees, take many guises. The Nats are all ghosts or spirits of heroes except for one, the chief Nat, Thagyamin Nat (the Indian god Indra, protector of royalty) who was elevated to this position in the 11th century by the great unifier, King Anawratha, who integrated Nat worship into Buddhism.
Thus the Nats became the guardians of the state and royal family and guarantors of dynastic continuity. Each Nat has its own history or legend which places the Nat in an important or heroic role in Burmese history.
While some Burmese regard Nat worship as mere superstition, most people do pay some attention to them and regard the Nat worship as a method of dealing with or solving the problems of this life, whereas Buddhism is concerned with future lives.
What's new is old - pagan goddess of the earth worship is old hat in south east asia.
So I take it these loons thing that "the arctic" is a separate, living creature with a brain?
I wonder how long it will take these "scientists" to figure out that "the arctic", like any other region on the earth, is subject to heating and cooling cycles that have been going on long before, and will continue well after, mankinds period on this earth?
Do they not wonder why the arctic at one time was a green lush tropical forrest? Then guess what? a cooling period happened, and it was covered with a thick sheet of ice. Then a warming period happened, (and is still happening) and the ice is retreating.
It has nothing to do with mere, puny mankind, who has the power to change NOTHING on this earth.
We are, in relation to the size of this planet, about as important as some green slime on a single wet rock on a beach with millions of dry clean rocks.
Phrases such as, "region is struggling" and "a region that is fighting back" suggest that the Artic is alive, is conscious of it's environment and has a will of it's own.
And what problems might those be, too much food for migrating reindeer? They are getting too fat?
Idiotic "scientists". Do they even know WHY the reindeer are always in perpetual migration mode? It's because if they stopped to graze, even for a day, they would destroy the sparse vegitation they rely on. The constant migration keeps it from being chewed down and killed off permanently.
That the vegitation is healthy and robust is a GOOD sign, that the herds aren't becomming too large for their habitat, which would then require agressive culling.
"Arctic Resists Warming"
Bottom stories of the day ping.
LOL ... The Arctic is a denier.
Of course, this will not be considered a refutation of what Algore has been saying. Instead, it will be used to prove that "our efforts" to turn back the tide of global warming are have an effect and we should therefore step up "our efforts."
I know! This alleged engineer sounds more like a Gaia-worshipping Wiccan priestess. What rubbish.
bump & a ping
