ON SATURDAY, IT BEGAN.

I was sitting at a table in my favorite cigar bar, drinking a Duckhorn pinot noir, and enjoying a Bolivar cigar that was part of my recent haul at Cigar Aficionado's Big Smoke evening. The house band had just started up. Life was good.

And then she walked in. The Woman with the Dirty Looks.

Apparently, she'd missed the sign outside that identified the establishment as the "Havana Cigar Company." And the walk-in humidor with its hundreds of cigars. And the counter, where cigarettes, lighters and all manner of cigar

You stopped too short. The bit below where you stopped was priceless.

I was just about to post this before I saw your post.

The part about the 'Truckload of Cigarettes' was priceless.

Your Carrie Nation reference is impressive. I'm one of her last remaining blood relatives (and a cigar smoking, Irish Whiskey drinking republican).

I'm sure she's spinning in her grave.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." -- C. S. Lewis

Well, I didn't read the entire thing, but if a "left-winger suddenly gets it" I assume you mean he comes out heavily on the anti-cig-grabber side of the issue, i.e., the Libertarian or personal rights side. Well, if that's true let me tell you, that as a FINALLY non-smoker , for the second and final time, and it's now been THREE years since I have had a cigarette ( I never smoked cigars)AND ALSO a strident pro-gun, RKBA advocate, I see NO contradiction between these two positions. It wouldn't bother me a bit for states ,municipalities, or the Feds to issue a blanket law governing smoking in bars, restaurants, whatever. I would bridle at banning it in the open air, on the streets and sidewalks, or any place else where the daily rounds of my ordinary daily life would probably put me in proximity of smokers. Don't you think it might create a few problems if suddenly we had national laws that ALLOWED EVERYONE the RKBA and wear those arms in public? Don't you think every psycho would go out and buy a holster, and be entitiled to parade around with impunity ,intimidating total strangers with said firearm on public view?
The fact is, it is possible for non-smokers to side with the smokers, and it is possible for non-gun-owners (like me) to side with RKBA, TO AN EXTENT. BUT there is a tipping point which exists precisely at that intersection between common sense and the public good: everything I suppose is legislatable and adjudicatable, but there should be laws preventing the smelly homeless from congregating in public libraries ( a case we had years ago, in MOrristown, NJ, near where I live) and the smelly smokers from spewing out their toxic odors in places where I might ALSO be happening to congregate. I could go on..... but just for openers, that is where I am......

I don't understand how a state that legalizes gambling and prostitution is so offended by - GASP! - smoking.

Oh really, just because YOU don't like to be around smokers EVERYWHERE should not permit smoking so you MIGHT congregate there?

Well, the dumb azzes lawmakers don't want either state to suffer, don't you know! They want that wonderful level playing field.

I think the antis are giong to have a major fight on their hands over trying to ban it in the AC casinos. The state lawmakers are not going to be happy because they KNOW it will hurt state coffers.

It aint just the left winger/democrats pushing these smoking bans...here in Missouri, the Republicans are just as guilty of pushing them.

How can someone call themselves conservative and still support these bans?

A smokeless Poker table? Next thing you know they'll be requiring cholesterol checks at Macdonald's prior to ordering.

Smoking hasn't been allowed in many poker rooms around LV for quite a while now. It hasn't been a big deal. Smoking has consistently been ok on the casino floor.

It's amazing that the voters would support these crap laws in a smoke-friendly town like LV.

Let's add one final observation: "let's let the market decide" ( a precept embraced by the Right more than the Left) could be employed WITHOUT the interference of laws on any level in governing ".who is allowed where, doing what" ...in time, the most offended NON-smokers would simply stop patronizing places that offend them, i.e., places that allow smokers to smoke with impunity. Likewise, ANY kind of place should be allowed to open its doors ONLY for the patronage of smokers, but how many have really done this? Either way, we are letting the market decide, and let the chips fall where they may. They will eventually fall where they may anyway. How much business will ANYONE lose if laws were imposed on smoking in bars and/or restaurants? Places that have traditionally allowed smokers, are caught on the horns of the same dilemma:cater to the group that will be loyal to you, or the one that will gravitate away from you (smokers or non-smokers alike).

The only thing the law accomplished is not letting me spend my money the way I want to.
That and pi**ing people off.

...a Planned Parenthood fundraiser now fundraiser for the ACS, one promotes death and choice, the other is anti-schoice and (supposedly) about protecting life.

I'm really starting to wonder if all my life is unreal and I'm only a figment of Rod Serling's imagination, living my life in a continuous loop from one of his more bizzare episodes of Twilight Zone.......I think I need help.
