Republicans Need a Great Communicator
SeaMax news ^ | 11/16/2006 | Fr. Michael Reilly

For a change it’s the Republicans who have some soul-searching to do after the elections.

There is no doubt that the Republicans failed to control spending, failed to control illegal immigration, and failed to reform social security. Nevertheless, the biggest failure of the Republican Party has been communication with the American people.

Ronald Reagan was the Great Communicator. George Bush can’t connect subject and predicate . Bill Frist looks like a doctor telling his patient that she has cancer and Denny Hastert just looks like he wants directions to the local pub.

In spite of the proverbial six year itch, Republicans should have been able to increase their margins in both the House and the Senate and set the stage for 2008.

The economy is stronger than ever and it’s clearly due to the Bush tax cuts. How many commercials did we see touting the economy during this election cycle?

Terrible blunders on the part of the Clinton Administration culminated in the worst attack on American soil in our history and Bush met the challenge head-on.

Bush successfully struck at the Taliban in Afghanistan and passed the Patriot Act, which repaired many of the flawed policies of previous administrations.

Republicans blamed individual Democrats for voting against the Patriot Act, but Republicans never explained the Patriot Act. Why didn’t the Republicans run a national ad campaign on national security? Why didn’t they explain the parts of the Patriot Act to the American people and show us specifically how the Patriot Act has kept us safe?

Ask a question in a poll about the Patriot Act and you may get a mixed result. Ask people if they favor giving captured terrorists the same rights as American citizens and the result would be quite different. The Republicans never made that case.

The United States has not been attacked since September 11. Was that just a coincidence, or did the new policies of the Bush Administration keep us safer? If they did, the Republicans never told us how.

By simply charging that the Democrats want to cut and run in Iraq, the Republicans allowed them to turn the election into a national referendum on Iraq at a time when the war is unpopular.

Now we get to spend at least two years in the Twilight Zone of Democratic leadership. If we do not find a standard bearer who can communicate for 2008, it might be even longer.

Someone that impressed me the few times I've seen him.

It passed long ago, but was subsequently declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court. Unfortunately, this was one thing that they got right.

I don't understand something. Term limits are constitutional for Governors and the President, but not for state legislatures and Congress?

And I thought I was the only person who ever voted for him. I voted for him in the GOP primary in Ohio in 00 and 04.

This is the factor that intrigues me about Romney, but I'm not sold on him otherwise.

I agree. Romney needs time to marinate . He just might be the one however. The Mormon faith would be an issue but not necessarily insurmountable if other strengths are able to offset it.

The rules for governors and state legislative bodies are controlled by the constitutions of the individual states.

Presidential term limits were established by the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution -- but no amendment covering Congress has ever been passed.

And many states have term limits for their state legislatures.

"Pro-death candidate. I kind of like kids."

I know, thank God we have a pro-life President now. He's done a great job of ending abortions(sarcasm). Lets be pragmatic here. As much as we dislike abortions, we can't end them. Even if Roe v. Wade were overturned it wouldn't end abortions. The issue would revert back to the states and do you really think California and New York and going to outlaw or even limit abortions? No, so therefore this issue it alot less important than the War on Terror, foreign policy, taxes, and the economy, all of which Giuliani would be perfect on and as President would actually have real influence on.

Rick Santorum is a great communicator--and he actually believes what he says. He mopped up that airhead Bob Casey the Lesser in the debates, but the Pennsyltucky voters saw the Casey name and lost all control in the voting booth.

Another great communicator is Michael Steele.

Newt Gingrich is ethically and character challenged. And I don't think he believes half of what he says. He likes to pontificate. Of course ,pillow talk with a Dem staffer while Speaker wasn't a bright idea either. You can't sleep with the enemy, that's why I don't care for Mary Matalin, who enabled CarEvil to reproduce. Yeccchhh!

Under media glare, Romney shines

If a Republican can get The Boston Globe to say something good about his style, he must be good.

Republicans had an opportunity for a great communicator in Michael Steele for the RNC but they flubbed that one up.

Mrs. Chaney is a great articulate communicator, plus she writes books. But Barbour? He always sounds like he has a mouth full of grits.

It would help if there were a conservative philosopher of some note writing pieces for the NYT. But America is a country of 300 million truck drivers and one philosopher and the philosopher died a couple years ago.

It's very Frustrating out of 300 million Americans we don't have a collection of Conservative minded candidates who are great leaders. If we do, I never hear about them.

Many conservative leaders head companies. They do not want to spend a lifetime in government service (power).

I think we should draft Fred Thompson, who comes across as someone who is authoritative and speaks very well.

You must have missed the hearings on Chinese funny money back in the nineties. The 'rats did some of the most outrageous things but were never held accountable. Fred Thompson was completely rolled by John Glenn and the rats on the committee, even though he was the chairman. Lying for the good of the party is a good must apply to the dem party as well as the communist party. I think that Thompson was completely disgusted with congress and just did not run again.

"Ted Nugent for Prez!"

Could you see him shooting his crossbow on the floor of the senate?

"Hey Frist! Get your ass in gear or else you'll be on my reality TV show getting hunted!"

He'd probably save money on Secret Service protection too: He probably packs superior firepower to theirs.

Attacking the media should be a major focus of Conservatives, and not just relying on a messenger.

Imagine where we would be as a party as well as a country if more republicans had stood up to the DBM as Lynn Cheney did when she asked Wolf Blitzer who he wanted to win in the Iraq war?

The Liberal Press would eat him alive.

Forget the press, the RNC does it without any help, remember when they had him handcuffed and arrested for tryng to participate in a debate?
