Thanksgiving at the White House, 2006 (Pardon me...a FReeper names the Turkeys)
The White House ^ | November 17, 2006 | rightinthemiddle (kinda)

Cast your vote to name the 2006 National Thanksgiving Turkey and alternate. President Bush will announce the winning names on Wednesday, November 22, 2006.

-snip-

This year marks the 59th anniversary of the National Thanksgiving Turkey presentation. Though live Thanksgiving turkeys have been presented intermittently to presidents since the Lincoln administration, the current ceremony dates to 1947, when the first National Thanksgiving Turkey was presented to President Harry Truman.

The presentation at times has brushed against broader history. For example, the November 1963 event was one of President Kennedy's last in the Rose Garden. The first President Bush conducted the 1990 ceremony just before leaving for Thanksgiving with the troops in the Persian Gulf region. President Clinton in 1996 returned from an Asian summit and literally went directly to the ceremony.

The web page is up!

I had the distinct "honor" of developing the list of names for the National Thanksgiving Day Turkey and Alternate. on behalf of one of my clients.

Cast your vote to name the 2006 National Thanksgiving Turkey and alternate. President Bush will announce the winning names on Wednesday, November 22, 2006.

The choices:

Ben and Franklin Plymouth and Rock Washington and Lincoln Corn and Copia Flyer and Fryer

My choice is Ben and Franklin, for historical reason, but in our democratic republic, the voters will decide.

I wish I'd submitted Free and Republic (darn). Perhaps you all have something better? I'm sure...

The Turkey should be named Marc Rich, because we already know it will get a Presidential Pardon.

And its wife didnt have to service Bill Clinton to get it either.

Worst job in the country: third and fourth turkeys in line of Presidential Thanksgiving succession. Number one and two always get pardoned so numbers three and four end up getting roasted.

My choice would be that he break tradition and only pardon one of the turkeys. Then I'd name them "Yummy" and "Lucky"...

Just for fun. Flyer and Fryer!

Too bad there weren't more choices. (Cary and Teddy, perhaps?)

FREEP THIS POLL ***PING!*** FRmail me and gordongekko909 if you want to be added or removed from the Freep this Poll! Ping list. And be sure to ping me to any polls that need Freepin', if I miss them. (looks like a medium volume list)

Well, I voted for Flyer and Fryer because I thought it was cute. I object to the suggestion of Plymouth and Rock because we are on the cusp of the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown Colony. Save Plymouth and Rock until 2020 and let us have something commemorating Jamestown this year -- James and Towne!
