A Maple Bluff teenager was sentenced this morning to prison for two years and put on probation for the next 10 for his role in an Oregon shooting that wounded three in 2005.
"You absolutely deserve to go to prison today," Dane County Circuit Judge Patrick Fiedler told Andrew Pirsch, 17, as he rejected a defense plea for a combination of probation and time in the Dane County Jail, rather than a prison term.
Pirsch was one of 10 teenagers and young adults who piled into three cars and drove from Madison to Oregon on the night of Aug. 9, 2005, then jumped from the cars and opened fire with a variety of weapons on a group of rival gang members they thought were going to kill them.
The group fired at least 32 rounds, shattering the calm of the residential neighborhood and wounding three young men. It turned out the two men that Pirsch and his fellow gang members were after were not present.
Wounded in the shooting were Samol Um, then 21, his brother Chamrouen Um, then 20, and Kimrien Chham, also 20 at the time. All have recovered from their wounds.
Police and others involved with the case said it was amazing that no one was killed in what amounted to a pre-emptive strike, and Fiedler agreed with that today, admonishing Pirsch that he was lucky to be facing sentencing only on counts of first-degree reckless injury, and not first-degree intentional homicide, which carries a mandatory life in prison sentence in Wisconsin.
Pirsch was initially charged with three counts of attempted murder and three of causing injury, but after testifying against the others, he faced lesser charges.
The difference between Assistant District Attorney Robert Kaiser and defense attorney James Connors was whether Pirsch should go to prison.
Kaiser wanted a 4-year term behind bars with nine years of extended supervision, while Connors argued for a jail term and probation.
Since his arrest, Connors argued, Pirsch has turned his life around and is not involved with gangs.
Pirsch apologized for his actions and said he was willing to accept whatever sentence the judge handed down.
These immigrant (most likely illegal, but that would be in poor taste to bring that up) kids that were shot have ties to MS13. It's simply a matter of time before revenge is exacted. How this kid (Pirsch) from the wealthiest suburb in the Madistan area got involved is still a mystery, other than they all went to high school together in Madistan.
For your list, if interested. It's not your standard story where an average citizen wins, but we've got another thug off the street for a while, at least.
If his parents want him to live long enough to legally drink alcohol then they would be well advised to relocate to another town, if not another state. Otherwise the MS13 bunch WILL come after him.
"Otherwise the MS13 bunch WILL come after him."
Well, he'll be safe in prison for a while. If I were his folks or siblings, I'd be high-tailing it out of town, for sure.
These are nasty, nasty people.
Very odd story. Maple Bluff is a rich, rich - and very "toney" - suburb. This is a kid who should have been attending the Varsity Mixer with his girlfriend Muffy, daughter of the CEO, in the late-model sports two-seater Dad bought him.
One is forced to scratch one's head and mutter sotto voce, "WTF???"

Those names sound Cambodian to me. Am I missing something?

If what I just wrote made you sad or angry,
it was probably just a joke.
Cambodian or Hmong. They've never said in ANY of the articles written in the local yellow rags around here. Too un-PC.
But then, they didn't mention that Pirsch is white, so all is well in PC-Madistan. *Rolleyes*
MS13 is thick in the prison system.
Yikes. Well, he won't be safe in there then, either. Good thing he told the judge he "quit gangs." ;)
You should get his response to why he would deny an innocent bystander effective self defense in the event they were caught up in this fight. Then publish it, and tell him to turn in his gun for the same reason he gave you.
Good idea, but it's a worthless argument in this state. We and IL don't have CC and now that we have a 'Rat as Governor again, and we lost the WI Senate (We have the Assembly) it won't get anywhere for another four years.
Hope I'm not a crime statistic between now and then.
