Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.) told a group of Democratic moderates on Tuesday that an ethics and lobbying reform bill being pushed by party leaders was "total crap," but said that he would work to enact the legislation because Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) supports it.
Murtha and Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) are locked in a battle for the House Majority Leader post, and both men made presentations for to the Blue Dog Coalition on Tuesday in a bid for their votes.
"Even though I think it's total crap, I'll vote for it and pass it because that's what Nancy wants," Murtha told the Blue Dogs, according to three sources who were at the meeting...

Well, I sure am glad that surgically implanted nose ring is working so well for Nancy, I have to assume that Murtha is playing by her rules cause he KNOWS that he should have been indited and ONLY the most LIBERAL senators would EVER possibly support him in ANY sort of bid for power in DC. Course when republicans get into things they shouldn't they resign, Democrats, no, they not only stay in power they defend each other so they can continue their corruption. I WISH the GOP would make more of a point of POUNDING that little reality home every freakin time they were in front of a microphone!

Way I see it, the real corruption in DC lies in the earmarks. I can't see the beneift in tracking the nickle and dime stuff. No senator was ever paid off in gift baskets ;^)

"Even though I think it's total crap, I'll vote for it and pass it because that's what Nancy wants," Murtha was claiming what he said was taken out of context - he indicated he was referring to the ethics bill being given more importance at the time than the war in Iraq.
Does Hardball have transcripts available on-line? I'd be curious to confirm what I believe I heard...

If I ever reached the point in my life where I did something because Nancy Pelosi wanted me to, I'd cut my own head off with a spork.

The guy lost his ethics years ago. Remember the $50,000 bribe he said he'd refuse "FOR NOW?" Doesn't sound too ethical to me.

Actually Murtha and ethics of any kind is a oxy-moron.
Sorta like Military and Inteligence or NBC CBS ABC fair and balanced. And a pigs azz is pork.

This entire process of one person essentially appointing all the committees makes you wonder why we still think of our government as a Republic.
How are the people represented when Pelosi (or any Speaker) essentially handpicks who will do what ?
I'd be happier if all committee members (and Speaker) were chosen by lottery. We might not get the "expertise" some are supposed to have on a particular issue, but they'd be a more representative sample of the House. It's the strategy we use for picking juries, it ought to be good enough for committees in Congress.

I agree with Murtha.
Democrats have no ethics. They can pass "ethics leglisation" from now to doomsday. To no avail.
