Hayworth Concedes Election Defeat
Phoenix Business Journal ^ | November 14, 2006

Posted on 11/14/2006 4:07:57 PM PST by Dane

Scottsdale Congressman J.D. Hayworth late Tuesday conceded defeat to former Tempe mayor Harry Mitchell in their contentious Arizona congressional contest.

Mitchell, a Democrat, led Hayworth on election night but the Republican refused to concede until more early and provisional ballots were counted.

Hayworth said in a statement Tuesday that it appeared he would not overtake Mitchell for the U.S. House seat representing Tempe, Scottsdale and Ahwatukee.

The Arizona contest was an especially negative and bitter one, centering around ethics accusations, border security and the Iraq war.

Mitchell's victory in a Republican-oriented suburban district was part of national tide for Democrats and the seat is expected be hotly contested in 2008.

Hayworth, a former sports broadcaster, could return to the media as a political pundit or talk show host

Fortunately, due to an opponent that campaigned on even stronger borders.

RE: "the hardline game"

When the opposition is playing "the NO LINE game", in defiance of all meaningful definitions of "national sovereignty" and the defense thereof, Hell yeah, thinking people of sound reason are always going to appear to be playing "the hardline game" by contrast; control is always hardline in comparison to chaos.

Our greatest problem is that we have become a culture where words mean nothing unless we favor them meaning something. The phrase, "shall not be infringed" comes immediately to mind. This is how the Left turns on and off the First Amendment; on for them, off for us; it means nothing to them except when they benefit from it meaning something to them. "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" has to be another one. Somehow that "life" part is just dandy until you get into the "emanations and penumbras" of the Constitution, and then, oh, well, THEN, you see, it's not "life" but "choice" that holds the trump card. It's a REALLY easy game to play when, at bottom, you really don't give a rat's ass about what the actual truth is, and/or you wish it wasn't the truth.

Hypocrisy has become so common that being the greatest one is now a symbol of status. Double-talking, two-faced, forked-tongued, purveyors of snake oil now stand where we used to tolerate only solid statesmen.

MY fondest wish, is that open-borders advocates should meet Gen. George Washington in the afterlife...so he could have the pleasure of stringing them up and bayoneting them personally as the sh!t-shilling, scum-sucking traitors they are.

That's "HARDLINE" you say? TOUGH! It's reality; deal with it.

looks like the commercial did not work in his district where the GOP registration advantage is appx. 5-3.

Correct me if I'm wrong, and I'll accept it, but it was my understanding that J.D. won by very slim margins in the last several elections because he is in a Dem district.

If Republican incumbent like Hayworth who is tough on illegal immigrants and in a border state like Arizona and running in a Republican district cannot win reelection, then this whole issue is overblown and perhaps Bush is right in taking these hard liners seriously.

You know I am really starting to get peeved at people who are doing nothing to help this party except to get the base pissed off.

First, this crap about GOP registration advantage is approx. 5-3 is an outright falsehood, please get your facts straight before you start trashing some in the party. The fact is that the registration makeup is Reps. 44 %, Dems 28%, IND 27%.

Every single thing I have seen has pointed to the Independents going 70+ percent for the democratic party. Making it impossible for JD to win no matter what he stood for.

It certainly looks to me like you people are doing your best to destroy the Republican party.

If I didn't know any better I would swear you are working for the Democratic party. Maybe it would be better to stop all these BS, we lost because "insert inane statement here", and start working to get the party back in power in 08.

No, Hayworth averaged 60 percent of the vote in his last three campaigns.

Then why did Hayowrth get more than 60% of the vote in previous elections, if it's such a democrat district.

"Then why did Hayowrth get more than 60% of the vote in previous elections, if it's such a democrat district."

I never said it was a Democratic District, it is whatever the Independents say it is, since they are the deciding factor. This year they voted for the Democrats by a margin of 70+ percent all over the country. The MSM had a big hand in that one.

But that is still beside the point. As Republicans we should all be looking to get the party back in power in 2008, why or how we lost this time is a mute point. The election is over, we need to bring the party together not split it up. Because if we don't we are in trouble for a long time to come.

Pissing off some of the base, no matter what percentage they are, is killing the Republican party.

Two nits: It's Bilbray, not Bilbry, and Tancredo's district is comfortably Republican (although one could argue that it was "marginally Republican" prior to 2002 redistricting, and under the 2004 "re-redistricting" plan approved by the GOP legislature but that got struck down by the Colorado Supreme Court).

How dishonest of you...I show or feel zero glee about this election.
Upset that your pet issue doesn't resonate with voters? Tough.

Last one I saw was 50%-47%, but I don't think it was final.
