Scottsdale Congressman J.D. Hayworth late Tuesday conceded defeat to former Tempe mayor Harry Mitchell in their contentious Arizona congressional contest.
Mitchell, a Democrat, led Hayworth on election night but the Republican refused to concede until more early and provisional ballots were counted.
Hayworth said in a statement Tuesday that it appeared he would not overtake Mitchell for the U.S. House seat representing Tempe, Scottsdale and Ahwatukee.
The Arizona contest was an especially negative and bitter one, centering around ethics accusations, border security and the Iraq war.
Mitchell's victory in a Republican-oriented suburban district was part of national tide for Democrats and the seat is expected be hotly contested in 2008.
Hayworth, a former sports broadcaster, could return to the media as a political pundit or talk show host
This will free him up to appear on Hannity & Colmes more often.
You mean Imus, where he will trash President Bush to his hearts content and make nancy pelosi green with envy over his anti-Bush rhetoric.
They should give him Tony Snow's old timeslot (rather than the Judge and whatever)...
Another Border Blowhard bites the dust.
That's what they should call the show now.
As opposed to what, Dane? Your non-stop attacks on pubbies you disagree with? You must love the sound of breaking glass, seeing how you love throwing stones within the confines of your glass house.
Two words, Dane - Jack Abramoff. Other pubbies implicated in the Abramoff mess went down as well, such as Burns in Montana and DeWine in Ohio - three very different candidates.
Excuse me dirt, I ain't the one who goes on Imus, trashing President Bush, that would be J.D. Hayworth.
Hey, hey, Brian and the Judge is great.
Then again we are all allowed our opinions.
Actually Dewine had no dealings with with Abramhoff.
Mitchell was able to out "I'm tough on the border' Hayworth. Amazing.
The border is one of the main issues of 08
I live here...JD was late to the party in the tv wars and from jump was said he is a hothead who needs to talk less and listen more. So he came to the tv wars DEFENDING himself to a local likeable Mayberry dumbass.
Same thing happend with rep guv candidate Len Munsil
too little too late and no name recognition
Happened last guv cycle when Matt Salmon ran.Assumption run a muck.
.but that's just me and I do this for a livin'
In districts where pro-enforcement incumbents lost, such as Arizona Rep. J.D. Hayworths (note: Hayworth has not conceded) and Indiana Rep. John Hostettler, their Democrat opponents actually campaigned on tough enforcement and border security. Hayworths opponent stated that enforcing our nation's immigration laws is an absolutely necessary ingredient to securing the U.S.-Mexico border, and promised to extend existing fencing in urban areas along our southern border. Sounds like hes taken a page out of Whatever It Takes, Hayworths recent book on combating illegal immigration.
You're thinking of Bob Ney, and FWIW, Conrad Burns returned the money he got from Abramoff, and the investigation is nowhere to be found. On the other hand, corrupt pols like Harry Reid have yet to return the money they received from Abramoff.
Uh you do know that Mitchell's first vote in the 110th Congress is a vote for nancy pelosi.
Pretty bad to lose with that kind of registration advantage considering he wasn't caught up in a scandal.
Oh, I really do hate to disappoint you, but his opponent is even more viralently anti-illegal than JD was. ROTFLMCO!
