I flew the S-3A/B in the Mediterrenean during the cold war. We regularly coordinated our activities with other airborne ASW assets, the P-3, H-3, and H-60.
IMHO, there is no better sub hunter than the latest US attack submarine.

You are correct. IMHO, two SSNs should be with each carrier. But they do not have the speed of the S3 and this allows the S3 to loiter around all major threat axis, well in advance of the carrier...looking and hunting and identifying. With 10 of those on board a carrier, a whole lot of territory can be covered very quickly...and covered again and again if necessary.
