CBS EVENING NEWS DOWN OVER YEAR AGO... For the first time since Katie Couric became anchor, CBS EVENING NEWS is down compared to a year ago, falling 4% from 8.069 to 7.758 million last week among total viewers, and the program also declined 9% among adults 25-54 from last year's 2.2 to a 2.0 rating last week... Developing...
Not only that, but Bob Schieffer appeals to the 80+ year old crowd that watches CBS news.
Go ahead I can't stop you. I actually got that from the old "Rowan & Martin's Laugh In" program. When they would spoof the news and the part when Goldie would come the introduce her with, "Now, here is the news from a broad."
Dan Rather Punts On Katie Couric
Dan Rather was on Don Imus this morning (or as Rather referred to him, "The I-Man") to promote his long-awaited new show on HDNet, "Dan Rather Reports" which airs for the first time tomorrow night at 8pm ET. Rather told USA Today's Peter Johnson that billionaire Dallas Mavericks/HDNet owner Mark Cuban gave him carte blanche to "do good journalism and don't worry about ratings, demographics or advertising," which Rather is contracted to do/not to do for three years. Though Rather couldn't tell Johnson by press time, he announced today on air that the first program would be an hour-long story about Iraq war veterans returning home from the front. Says Rather of his potential viewers: "If they don't do anything else, they'll learn something about these troops, the price they have paid, their families, and what we need to be thinking about in terms of the care of these people who've been wounded both physically and psychologically, and their families." (See it on Ch. 79, sez them.)
Rather also chit-chatted about his experience reporting election results on Comedy Central (which Imus noted was regarded by some to have been his most entertaining election night work) and about the election-night reports by some other networks with which Rather may have happened to have some experience. Rather happily lauded former colleague Bob Schieffer ("Shieffer's an old pro, and there's nobody knows more about Washington politics print, electronic journalism or otherwise than Bob") but was more circumspect when it came to opining on CBS Evening News" successor Katie Couric:
"When I left CBS not because I left Les Moonves and others said they wanted to go in a new direction. I think it's clear from what I can see that they are going in some new direction. I think one should give them time they're in a transition period, a tremendous transition, [with] Katie Couric [coming over] from another place. So let's talk, say, at the end of February - once we get thorugh November sweeps and February sweeps, then we'll know more about what these new directions are, which ones they settle on, which ones they don't, and make a judgment at that time how they're doing.
Concluded Rather: "You'll recognize that as a punt."
Imus did not similarly punt: "We've watched it, it's awful." Said Rather: "I disassociate myself from those remarks." Then they all laughed.
Desperation time. Let's run a different flag up the flagpole and see who salutes it...
cystoscopy, anyone?
"It looks like Sky News is ditching the rebroadcast of CBS News (which occurs at 12:30 AM every weekday) as well."
Now that IS funny!
I always thought they just should have hired Laurie Dew. After all, they're just news readers - not journalist. They'd atleast get back the 25-35 male demographic.
I doubt there has ever been a less intelligent person asked to read the news. She's got nothing, no charisma, no charm, no class, and no brains.
"She's got nothing, no charisma, no charm, no class, and no brains."
Don't hold back, tell us what you really think.
FYI..today's NY POST has a blurb in their TV section that her much ridiculed "Free Speech" segment is being cut back to perhaps once a week..
There are THAT many people out there who have either lost their remotes, or the batteries are dead? I pray to God that there arent any viewers out there trapped in bed, unable to move, and without a remote.
The horror, the horror....
Yeah well they are still UP ENOUGH to have caused chaos in the last election
I haven't watched the network evening news in at least 10 years.
Waste of time.
CBS News is redundant; we already have two other Left wing TV News stations.
I remember when I was a kid, we used to watch the news at home because that was all that was on TV. I don't watch any of it anymore (including Fox). I will watch the State of the Union address or another important speech or a few other rare things that I want to see live. But for my day to day news, I get it from the internet.
I can't even stand to watch the weather on my local news, I don't give a damn "why" the climate is whatever way it is, I just want to know what to wear.
Katie's ratings are so bad she's earned a new nickname at CBS... DAN RATHER!
Believe it or not, this was a Saturday Night Live Weekend Update line.
Good. Now we can say "CBS and Couric curtail free speech." :-)
It was rather pleasant. Actual news about the city, information about traffic, a straightforward weather forcast and NO PUNDITS!
I think I will try it again...carefully changing channels to the Food Network before the Today Show comes on.
