Israel's war was a tactical and strategic failure. But it wasn't as bad as the article paints.

My suspicion is that Israel neglected air-ground tactics for some time because they had been successful up 'til now. Meanwhile, the bad guys have been evolving theirs against the US. So Israel was fighting the last war. Of course, handwringing by the Olmert adm contributed to the result also.

I suspect there's a lot of work going on in the IDF now to fix that. Doesn't seem like there's much work going on politically. I do not understand how Olmert's government survived.

Neither do I. I actually, in disagreement with many freepers, think that Olmert's (and previously Sharon's) strategy of disengagement is correct. What Olmert missed (and Sharon wouldn't have) is that highly credible deterrence is an absolutely essential component of the disengagement strategy. Without that the policy is indeed suicidal. Olmert screwed the pooch on deterrence. If he wants to advance his own policy the best thing he could do on its behalf is to resign.
