In a statement for FoNet news agency, Serbian president Boris Tadic assessed the decision by United Nations special envoy for Kosovo status Martti Ahtisaari to publish his proposal for resolving the status of Kosovo after parliamentary elections in Serbia as useful.
"This whole time I have supported the position that artificial deadlines are something that does not contribute to either a solution for Kosovo and Metohija or the stabilization of the situation in Serbia," said Tadic.
According to Tadic, Ahtisaari was influenced by the fact that Serbia is to hold parliamentary elections but also the fact that there are different positions and differences of opinion within the Contact Group with respect to what direction to take with regard to the future status of Kosovo.
"I expect the forthcoming period to be used to talk about the possible solutions and to find a solution that will satisfy all sides that have an interest in Kosovo," emphasized Tadic.
He repeated that Serbia will fight against the independence of Kosovo.
"Today Kosovo is closer to independence than any other solution, taking into account the position of the international community," emphasized Tadic, adding that "this has been a great and difficult battle from the very beginning of the negotiating team's work".
"We have achieved a certain degree of success and we must not be too satisfied with just any results because this is an exceptionally difficult process for Serbia," Tadic pointed out.
According to the Serbian president, if Kosovo were to become independent, this would contribute to the destabilization of the situation in Serbia and in the region and it would be counterproductive in the broad sense.
"Wherever we have multiconfessional countries, countries with a complex national structure, where there is a concentration of population or of a single nation in a single part of a country, we could see the emergence of demands for secession and the creation of new countries," warned Tadic.

Kojic said there is a noticeable increased presence of KFOR and UNMIK.
