WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrats, who won majorities in the U.S. Congress in last week's elections, said on Sunday they will push for a phased withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq to begin in four to six months.
"The first order of business is to change the direction of Iraq policy," said Sen. Carl Levin (news, bio, voting record), a Michigan Democrat who is expected to be chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee in the new Congress.
Levin, on ABC's "This Week," said he hoped some Republicans would emerge to join Democrats and press the administration of President George W. Bush to tell the Iraqi government that U.S. presence was "not open-ended."
Bush has insisted that U.S. troops would not leave Iraq until the Iraqis were able to take over security for their country.
"We need to begin a phased redeployment of forces from Iraq in four to six months," Levin said.
Speaking on the same program, Sen. Joseph Biden (news, bio, voting record), a Delaware Democrat who is expected to head the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he supported Levin's proposal for a withdrawal.
This ought to wake up the public. they are not representatives doing the will of the public but narcissists doing whatever they want.
And Iran will get nukes.
All the consequences will take 10 years to play out, and by then the moonbats will have moved on and will be screaming about something else. When we all say "I told you so" they will call us mean spirited - and the younger ones won't even know what we are talking about.
Meanwhile the culture smog machine will run in overdrive to make some trivial domestic fad seem like the second coming and try to remember the years of the disaster as the bell-bottom years or the funny-hair years or what have you.
And George W. Bush will remain el diablo. Meanwhile, the real el diablo will feast.

Sometimes bad ideas can't be thought through; they need to be realized in practice to be fully appreciated.
Only if Bush doesn't use his veto pen. Of course, he has a habit of giving in to what the other side wants.
"That's the general plan..."
Well then how the hell come none of these rats have said anything about the troops in Bosnia that clinton PROMISED to have out by the end of 1996.
What about all the troops in Korea, Germany. It took a long time to stabilize those areas.
The problem now is that the jihaid's are worldwide and we cannot leave them Iraq as a base. We need bases in their territory. This is was is really just getting going and we cannot start retreating now.
If they succeed in this it will be good news for the GOP. Unfortunately it will most likely mean a civil war (in Iraq probably not here), and the terrorists that are currently going to Iraq may end up here. If they succeed and none of our doom and gloom predictions pan out or the media ignores the bloodbath (very likely), then at least the War in Iraq is off the table for the 2008 campaign.
I understand what you are saying and it will happen
My problem is .. in the mean time, a whole lot of people are going to die because of this
It didn't have to happen this way
Bush also would have to sign it into law. Of course, apparently he has misplaced his veto pen for the past six years.
"I don't know what they are thinking."
They are thinking that since Bush is practically caucusing with the democrats on issues like immigration & Rumsfeld, that it is only a short stretch to get him to roll over on this as well.
They are also thinking that since they were swept into power in Congress largely on this issue, that they will have the momentum to make this happen.
Truth is, they probably will.
Having convinced themselves that every war conducted by a Republican President is Vietnam, the Baby-boom Democrats are bound and determined to make it so. That is their template: every war is Vietnam, every scandal is Watergate, and every Republican is Nixon.
Millions will die unnecessarily...like after Vietnam was abandoned.
They will reap the whirlwind....
Unfortunately many good people will be swept up in it
Flame away, but this needs to be done. The only caveat I see is if they(Iraqis) decide to turn it all over to the terrorists and warlords, then they are all the enemy and that means we go back to square one:
You're either with us or the terrorists.
And in the end that is what our foreign policy demanded. That policy is not 'open ended,' it is meant to make terrorism end.
They will lose this war for us. They will pull the troops out of what they and the MSM will spin as an unwinable situation. Then with the help of their MSM friends they will go on to blame Bush, Rumsfeld and whomever the feel like blaming for getting us involved in an unwinable war. After our withdrawal, the MSM won't report on how things deteriorate in Iraq or the middle east. It will all be peachy cream over there while Democrats are in charge. It's apparent that even with the best military in the world, we will never win a war again as long as Democrats have any power.
The Libertarians should be proud of themselves now ?
I can hear their allies ululating from here....
