Corruption Case Resurfaces For Alcee Hastings
By Julia Malone | Friday, November 10, 2006, 11:06 AM
With Rep. Alcee Hastings a frontrunner to be House Intelligence Committee chairman, hes already facing unpleasant publicity stemming from his involvement in a corruption case years ago.
The Florida Democrat, a former federal district judge, was acquitted of conspiring to solicit a bribe from criminal defendants in 1982. But after a jury found attorney William Borders guilty of being his co-conspirator, Hastings was impeached and removed from the federal bench by Congress in 1989.
Hastings then won a seat in the House of Representatives. Borders, who refused to testify against him in the bribery case, went to prison and won a pardon from President Clinton in 2001.
The case didnt die there. Borders has twice petitioned the District of Columbia Office of Bar Counsel to reinstate him to practice law. His latest request went all the way to the Supreme Court, where the facts of the bribery conspiracy, the Hastings role and Borders refusal to testify were laid out once again.
The high court in September 2003 declined to grant a hearing on the Borders disbarment.
I hope not. Hillary or some equally repulsive (if that's possible) dem would promise to make him a federal judge again.
How can you have a guilty co-conspirator, yet be acquitted?
Most excellent video Doug!
I can't believe someone of this disrepute is even ELIGIBLE for Congress.....let alone a Committee Chairmanship
Democrat. Any Republican similarly situated would be in jail.
That's only right ~ and best of all, that's what they want donchaknow@!?
That is an interesting question. I guess it is like several people involved in a crime and one cuts a deal on his pals to get himself off. In this case, the guy went to jail and didn't cut a deal. Unless, of course, he knew that Clinton was eventually going to pardon him.
bump
HA....I remember when my husband was working in Birmingham, AL during the early 90's....some mayor (Birmingham?) was in jail....on weekends.....
"I can't believe somone of this disrepute is even ELIGIBLE"
Well, don't hold your breath waiting for him to step aside. Pelosi will give him some big position and then he'll say you can't prosecute a member of Congress.
The Democratic Party. The party where being a felon is a prime qualification for getting elected. Republican corrupt pols get dismissed an arrested. Similar Dem pols just get elected...and appointed to key positions.
