National focus: Speaker's home district often grows in reputation, financial favor
Washington -- Rep. Nancy Pelosi and her city, San Francisco, rose to the top of the congressional political heap this week. Pelosi's impending elevation by her fellow Democrats to the post of House speaker, a first for women and for a Californian that will become official in January, already is generating national and international attention for the city. It might also mean more federal dollars from congressional appropriators who inevitably look favorably on projects from the speaker's home district, even if he or she doesn't overtly push for them.
But analysts said Pelosi's rise will do nothing to quiet the loud conservative critics of San Francisco liberalism and the "San Francisco values" they scorn. If anything, Pelosi's prominence as speaker might intensify the criticism and make the overwhelmingly Democratic city an issue in the 2008 presidential and congressional elections.
Pelosi said in an interview with The Chronicle on Nov. 3 that Republicans already failed in their attempts this past campaign to make an issue of her political philosophy and that of her San Francisco constituents.
"I've never seen a campaign before where the president of the United States and his party have decided to attack one city,'' she said.
And she said that as speaker, she will relish the focus on San Francisco. "I hope they will pay attention to San Francisco. It is a magnificent place that has a lot to offer the country,'' Pelosi said in her Capitol offices.
With her as speaker, she said, "California and San Francisco will have a stronger voice in the Congress, not only to promote our issues but to bring an entrepreneurial spirit to the Congress, a disruptive spirit so that we can bring fresh eyes

If more and more people understood what San Francisco was all about, more and more people would despise liberalism.

The silver lining here is that now the whole country -- the whole WORLD for that matter -- gets to see just how looney Sodom-on-the-Bay is. I'm sure that will APPEAL to the Euro-weenie crowd, but it will APPALL anyone with a vestige of capitalism, common sense, or morality.

the whole WORLD for that matter -- gets to see just how looney Sodom-on-the-Bay is.Unfortunately, the whole world is pretty much as looney as SF. I doubt they'll see anything unusual...at least Western Europe won't.

I must admit its a draw as a tourist attraction. Still, I can't bring myself to love it and consider this: its one of the most EXPENSIVE cities in America to live in and along with affluent Marin County, its far removed from Middle America in terms of lifestyle and character. I wouldn't live there if you paid me enough to make it possible.

If you can afford it and don't mind it being overrun with liberals, a conservative could learn to tolerate being forever outvoted.

With her as speaker, she said, "California and San Francisco will have a stronger voice in the Congress, not only to promote our issues but to bring an entrepreneurial spirit to the Congress, a disruptive spirit so that we can bring fresh eyes to the challenges that we face and in the spirit of the American West come up with solutions that look to the future and not to the past.'' Translation:
With her as speaker, she said, "California and San Francisco will have a stronger voice in the Congress, not only to promote our liberal issues but to bring an entrepreneurial spirit obstructionist, communist view to the Congress, a disruptive spirit so that we can bring fresh eyes 40 more years of the same corrupt ideas to the challenges that we face and in the spirit of the American West come up with solutions that look to the future and not to the past present day California corrupt values, brainwash the ignorant masses into believing every lie liberal Democrats say.''

Up until the '40s, SF was a respectable Conservative GOP city. It had GOP Mayors as late as the '60s and Congressmembers until the '70s. Take away the ugly people and its vile politics, it's a beautiful city.
