Sen. John McCain, considered the front-runner for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, intends to launch an exploratory committee next week, party officials said Friday.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid pre-empting a public statement from the four-term Arizona senator.
McCain, the Republican maverick who unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination in 2000, already has opened a bank account for the committee, officials said.
"The senator has made no decision about running for president," said Eileen McMenamin, a McCain spokeswoman.
Aides to McCain say the senator will discuss a presidential bid with his family over the end-of-the-year Christmas holiday.
McCain, 70, is a former U.S. Navy pilot who was a prisoner of war in Vietnam. He was elected to the Senate in 1986, and served in the House of Representatives for four years before that.

Giuliani 44.8% 1,341
Pro-choice; no ban on partial-birth abortions. Opposes ban on gay marriage.
How is this going to play in the south?

Romney is pro-life, anti-gay marriage, anti-amnesty, tough on national security, vetoed a stem cell research bill and he just slashed $425 million from the budget. Additionally, he is extremely articulate and quite good looking. Nobody is perfect.

Yup. I like Governors Bob Riley and Huckabee, both from the South with high approval ratings in their own states.
We only have 22 governorships left now, most of which are either ineligible (Arnold), liberal (plenty here), or unelectable (Bush, Perry).
It's a wide open race for both parties; no incumbent President or Vice President running.

Nobody at 70 years old is interested in being a Vice President.

Romney 100% pro-life? That's what he says. And Rudi still supports partial birth abortions! How can that be?

I don't know if the country will vote for President Huckabee. It's the name. He needs a new one. (Shallow I know, but this is America we are talking about)

McCain's an idiot, the press loves him because of his Maverick image they gave him, but they will turn on him and when they do, his nuttiness will come out and sayonara.
The point will be moot anyhow, for the most part unfortunately now a days, style and looks matter in Presidential races.
But in Mclames case it's fortunate for us because have you seen him lately? He's looking real old and decrepit. It's night of the living dead time, he's whiter than dead E.T. He looks like he died last year and just doesn't know it. Nobody's going to vote for a guy who scares little children
