Religious right desert Bush

A PORTION of the religious right, usually a bedrock for US President George W. Bush, defected to the Democratic Party in this week's legislative elections following sex scandals and complaints the Republicans were taking them for granted.

White Christian evangelicals remain overwhelmingly Republican, but about 30 per cent opted to vote for Democrats on Tuesday, an increase of six to 10 percentage points compared to previous elections, according to exit polls published in the US media.

The Democrats secured majorities in both houses of Congress for the first time since 1994, despite hopes among Republican strategists that "values voters" would help the party retain control of the national legislature.

And contrary to forecasts that religious conservatives would stay away from the ballot booth, voter turnout resembled that of previous elections, the exit polls showed.

Among Roman Catholics, already less inclined to lean right compared to evangelicals, Democrats won 54 per cent support in the pivotal state of Ohio, compared to just 32 per cent in the presidential contest two years earlier.

In Virginia and Montana, Catholic voters' support for Democrats rose eight percentage points and six points, respectively.

While the scale of the Democratic victory was mainly due to a major swing among independent voters, the shift of just a portion of the religious right appeared to have cost the Republicans dearly in certain states and precincts.

This is like the "bizarro world" story about the pro-Israel Jews who voted Democrat. So anti-abortion, anti homosexual-marriage Christians voted for Rats who'll pass gay marriage laws and only allow appointment of activist judges. What the ??????

As an evangelical Christian myself, I call hogwash on this.

I can't think of a single person I know (a Christian, a PRACTISING Christian) who would vote for someone whose values are SO off base from what we believe...

No real sources listed here, just a few anecdotal examples. Hardly believable.

Many Jews place liberalism over everything else (including Israeli security). We're never going to capture them. The goal must be to get Evangelicals, Catholics and Reagan Democrats voting Republican again.

I'd also like to see the GOP do more to woo middle class blacks. I personally think it's easier to win them over than Jews.

Actions (votes) speak louder than words.

I wonder of our GOTV efforts actually boosted some Democrats?

Religious right desert Bush

Or: Bush deserted the religious right.

You just don't lose all those votes for no reason.

I don't believe this for one minute.

Unless of course the "religious right" repayed Bush by betraying their own beliefs. Which is mega stupid to the max.

Two articles down from this one, Pew says moderates/Indep. won the election for the Dems...that is more likely.

I've been over and over this on my local town forum. None of them know what they voted "FOR"....they simply voted "AGAINST". Just brilliant.

More likely the rats cheated and need to explain where the manufactured votes came from.

That seems to be exactly what happened. Just look at the results here in VA. The marriage Amendment passed with a clear majority 57.08%. There is something that needs to be done. We as conservatives need to quit being afraid of debating this issue on grounds not based on the bible. One doesn't have to be a bible believing Christian to disagree with Gay marriage. We need to go to the next level and propose an amendment that would keep gay propaganda out of schools. The tide can be turned back.
