BRADENTON -- Ernest Charles Pusey, 111 years old and nattily attired in a dress shirt and light blue cardigan, smiled slightly when Gov. Jeb Bush walked in his trailer Friday and gave him a medal for helping win World War I.

Governor honors veteran Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, right, presents veteran Ernest Pusey with a World War I service medal during a visit to his home Friday, in Bradenton. The 111-year-old veteran served in the U.S. Navy from 1917 to 1919 aboard the battleship USS Wyoming.

To me, the generation that fought the First World War was truly the greatest generation. They encountered horror on a scale no one ever could have imagined in the Victorian period. The modern world was born during World War I, not World War II.

After losing their first encounter against the fresh U.S. troops, Germans in France were heard complaining that they couldn't kill the Americans, that "they just wouldn't die."

This guy shows they were right!
