Newt Gingrich, the Once and Future "Architect"?
Friday, November 10, 2006 | Momaw Nadon

IMHO, Newt Gingrich won't be elected President, but he is far and away the best choice for the post of top Republican strategist. Whether this is in the RNC or somewhere else, I don't know.

He needs to call the shots in 2008 while maintaining a low public profile. He can be the true "architect" of conservative victory once more. He led us to victory in 1994. He can do so again in 2008.

Gingrich should be to Romney what Rove is to Bush.

"People refuse to believe the truth that we're in a long fight for our way of life that's barely begun."

Sadly, you are so right.

You wrote, "This is where the Repubs failed us -- they did not fight, and they were not conservative."

This is the second time today I've read 'Republican' and 'conservative' as an important distinction while engaging in dialog with another FReeper, and I find the distinction troubling.

I'm a Republican, and believe in party loyalty because the Republican Party is the currently the only means by which conservative thought may be integrated into national policy. Unless and until there is a Whig-like party split over a matter of overriding principle, I'll hold my nose and vote for a Republican candidate even if I don't agree with his or her stance on every issue.

Dunno. I'm sure he has his problems but sure seems possible he could get conservatives' votes. For him to survive as a Republican in MA and have the following record makes him a promising candidate worthy of being considered. Keep in the mind this list is written by an ACLU liberal type and there could be some factual errors as liberals like to lie. But this liberal hates him (note he does agree with the NRA types on guns).

Abortion and Birth Control:
Opposes Roe v. Wade.
Believes that abortion should be banned in all cases except rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother.
Vetoed an emergency contraception bill in July 2005.
Has kept campaign promise not to tamper with state abortion laws.
Said in 1994: "I had a dear, close family relative that was very close to me who passed away from an illegal abortion ... [W]e will not force our beliefs on others on [abortion]. And you will not see me wavering on that." Romney has in fact wavered on that, but probably more out of political expediency than anything else.

Death Penalty:
Made a quixotic attempt to reinstate the Massachusetts death penalty in 2005.

Gay Rights:
Has used strong anti-gay rhetoric in recent years in an apparent effort to distance himself from his state's position in favor of gay marriage.
Supports the Federal Marriage Amendment.
Opposes civil unions.
Has made statements in opposition to gay adoptions.
Fired an openly gay member of the state appellate tax board, then refused to explain why.

Gun Rights:
Signed a permanent ban on "assault weapons" in 2004.
Has a C- rating from the NRA, which is almost unheard of for a Republican.

Immigrants' Rights:
In 2004, vetoed a bill that would have allowed undocumented immigrants to attend Massachusetts public universities at in-state tuition rates.
Recently proposed deputizing state troopers to arrest suspected undocumented immigrants, despite the fact that state troopers are not trained in immigration law.

Rights of the Homeless:
Drastically cut state-run alcohol and drug abuse prevention programs for the homeless.

War on Terror:
In September 2005, he suggested that the FBI wiretap mosques and spy on new Muslim immigrants

Exactly. Because those of us who know something about guns know what the liberals call "assault weapons".

They start out with AK-47's and eventually end up with Browning shotguns and S&W side arms.

NEVER.

I'd vote for Cheney in a heartbeat--no amount of negative portrayals by the MSM can obscure his intelligence, wit, charisma, and character.

I like his wife, Lynn, too.

Hmmm.

?

!

Nah, the voting public would never go for it, not after Bill and Hillary.

If he was shown to be truly Pro-Life, he would be the perfect candidate to take on Hitlery in 2008.

True pro-life is preventing terrorism in America. If terrorists are blowing up cities, is that pro-life?

Draft Newt. He is a solid conservative, a brilliant political strategist and a highly capable legislator.

Baggage smaggage. The Clitmans had more baggage than American Airlines.

Romney, Guiliani and McCain do not have his conservative credentials and never will.

Newt has grown quite a lot in the last 12 years. I think the liberals fear him more than any of the current front runners and wannabes; and for good reason.

He lacks executive experience and that is the only drawback I see. Cheney/Gingrich: now that would set the liberal's hair on fire. If only it were possible.

:^) Good discussion you guys and gals.

There are a lot here that love to use the "BAGGAGE" buzzword.

The reality is that running for President is not just about whether you are right on the issues, but whether you have the right temperment, personality, and character to handle the job. A person's "baggage", which you dismiss, can sometimes shed light upon whether a candidate is fit. Gingrich's main "baggage" happened well into his adulthood, while he was in public life and in fact was Speaker. To think people should just forget about what he did then is unreasonable, IMO.

Ur very right we all know that Rush Limbaugh wants Newt to run as well he should ever since the Republicans threw him under the bus the party has gone all hell. People here are way too blind to see it.

Ditto that.

"If Newt ran, he would most likely face Hillary. Compared to her baggage only Castro , Ortega, or Chavez could look any worse."

Not when MSM gets done spinning it.

I hope he throws his hat in the primary ring. It will be good to see him go up against the liberal Repubs with a staunch conservative, pro-America, pro-Constitution protection, pro-strong national defense agenda.

The libs will be squirming to put out ANY platform that shines of something other than repressive socialism. It would be an easy win for a fighting conservative that is not afraid to tell the MSM to pound sand, and go for the throat of Hitlery....
