Shoeboxes For Soldiers: Local Children Reach Out

Students at St. John Lutheran School in Ellisville line up and fill up shoeboxes with treats that will be sent to soldiers in Iraq.

By Mike Bush

(KSDK) - At St. John Lutheran School in Ellisville, kids were in the hall on Thursday learning a lesson that can't be found in a book.

"We are packing boxes with treats and goodies to send to the soldiers in Iraq," says sixth grader Hannah Finley.

Shoeboxes for Soldiers began last year while the father of two St. John students was stationed in Baghdad.

"From 5 years old to 13 year old, they all know it's the right thing to do," says parent volunteer Michelle Abel.

Kids are putting everything in the boxes from candy to popcorn to deodorant.

"What do you hope happens when they open the boxes?" we asked second grader Josiah Schaller.

"They will be surprised and happy," he said.

Lt. Col. Paul Tandy of the Missouri Army National Guard says the soldiers will be surprised and happy and he should know. He was the father in Baghdad last year.

"When word got out what was in them there was this mass frenzy to come get their box," says Lt. Col. Tandy.

And he brought home the pictures to prove it.

Even more than the goodies according to
Lt. Col. Tandy what the soldiers appreciate are the homemade cards and letters.

"What did you write in your letter?" we asked second grader Jackie Boyd.

"For them to be safe," said Jackie.

"Did you write a card?" we asked second grader Ellie Alm.

"Yes," she said.

"What did it say?"

"It said God bless you."

The boxes are expected to arrive in Iraq in time for the holidays and the soldiers will know that they have dozens of little angels, a half a world away.
