They will need the draft. My relatives in the military are telling me that reenlistments just dropped to ZERO in their commands.
To: BeHoldAPaleHorse
Why did they just drop to zero? Since a few months ago, or a few days ago?

I don't believe in the draft, but I would suppport some type of national service for all young adults.

Well, the Dems reinstating the draft will certainly get them a lot of votes in 08.

Why did they just drop to zero? Since a few months ago, or a few days ago?Starting Wednesday ("I find the timing suspicious"). About two dozen reenlistments that were almost finalized got cancelled by the potential reenlistee.

No point in having a draft if we aren't at war with anyone.

That is probably what the Dems know. Draft cannon fodder because no one wants to serve under them.

Good luck with pushing mandatory military service for women, Charlie. I can tell you right now, America is not ready for visions of a multitude of women coming back in body bags.

There will be no discussion of a draft in the next two years.
It was a ploy.

I don't believe in the draft, but I would suppport some type of national service for all young adults. I would also. I think everyone that physically can should serve this nation. The burden of keeping us free should not fall only to a few. (And before you ask, No, I have not served but I think it would have only made me a better person.)

I wish they would draft me, but I'm quite a few years over the limit. I'd like to get my hands on a Ma Deuce or two...

I was drafted. I don't think it's a good idea (Heinlein once said that one cannot draw esprit de corps from a barrel by random lottery). If the draft is necessary to get the bodies, then the war's lost anyway. If the bodies are enlisting, why have a draft? (In WW2, the draft was a manpower management tool to ensure that the Army got enough personnel--the Navy and Marines got a lot more volunteers than they could actually use).

It was a ploy. I agree completely. A draft would be political suicide. If the Dems really have on in mind they'll wait until afer 2008.
To: BenLurkin
Exactly
It was a ploy to turn draft age people against Bush in whatever sick way they could.
Now the excuses and evil republican name calling will start for bringing it up.

Sorry dog, but I disagree. The all volunteer force is the most educated, most skilled armed force in history. I am vehemently opposed to reinstating any kind of draft.
Besides, old codgers like me worked our butts off to get it off the ground in the late 70's & early 80's.
If people want to volunteer in other areas, like the Peace Corps, fine. I'm just against the concept of forced national/"volunteer" service.

This is in a grand total of five units, and it's in three days. Also, the retention guy in each command now has a LOT of spare time--nobody's walking into their offices.
The troops have read the writing on the wall, and they're proceeding to the exit in an orderly, disciplined, calm manner. This orderly, disciplined, calm manner will last until the first email rumor of Gates being ready to invoke stop-loss hits.

WHAT HAPPENED ???Well, I'll give you a hint: it started on Wednesday, November 8th.
