Meet Dan Boren, the lone Democrat in Oklahoma's Congressional Delegation (may challenge Pelosi)
A friend at OU who is close to the family ^ | 10 November 2006 | A friend at OU who is close to the family

Nothing concrete yet and don't get your hopes up . . . but I have heard from a reliable source at Oklahoma University who is close to the Boren family (father is former senator, governor and current president of the university; son is the lone Democrat in the congressional delegation representing the state's easternmost counties) that many people in the District have family serving in the military in Iraq who have contacted his office and expressed extreme reservations about turning over control of key national security committees to national security risks.

Pelosi is holding firm on her pledge to reorganize the house based on strict seniority, including turnover of chairmanship of the house intelligence committee to Congressman A. Hastings of Florida, an impeached federal judge who was convicted for bribery and judicial malfeasance on a near-unanimous vote when the Democrats controlled both houses of congress.

If Pelosi does not compromise on national security related committees, then Boren is said to be considering a challenge to her as speaker.

This is not an idle threat. Boren is a member of the Blue Dog Democrat coalition, a group which could have as many as 50 members once the new freshman class is sworn in.

She doesn't deserve to be the face of this nation, esp. since she is an elitist and is a commie self-serving troll.
We don't need to hide in our shells in order to make her job easier. Politically correct is OUT!!!

If I were a Republican i'd bring every "blue dog" to the side and tell them they'll run there vote for Nancy the San Fransicko liberal down there throat in 2 years and they and the 200 Republicans bring in a "blue dog" like Boren and take the speakership. That would be awesome.

After watching President Bush praise Pelosi as the first woman speaker of the house yesterday, I find it hard to believe this is on the table.

But, I would LOVE to see it. Pelosi used to be annoying, or humorous depending on my mood. In our #3 position she is downright scary.

I agree. I'd rather have a sane person a few heartbeats from the Presidency, even if it means the Dems gain some governing credibility.

The thought of Pelosi as two short steps from the Presidency before, after or during a terrorist attack gives me the chills.

There's no way this can happen. Too many facist-left RATS want to poke us all in the butt with a Pelosi.

Yes there is. If all the Republicans threw their support behind him along with enough conservative Democrats. Normally voting for Speaker is just a formality. Each party has a candidate, and all the member vote strictly along party lines. It could get really interesting if a cross-partizan coalition could thwart the Democrat leadership.

Back in the '80s Republicans proposed such deals with conservative and moderate Democrats to thwart the power of the left wing Democrats. The Democrats only have about a 24 seat majority that is actually smaller than the lame duck Republican majority. I don't think they know how to keep a slim majority together as effectively as Republicans have been able to.

Splitting the Dems while they control Congress would be brilliant. There are some Dems who have more in common with Republicans than they do with Teddy, John Fn, Nancy and Barney.

He did the same thing while Governor of Texas. Can't find a link to comments by Texas Democrats pissed that he only made arrangements at his acceptance speech for the conservative Dems who helped him in Texas. The Libs absolutely hated him.

I thought I remembered reading that somewhere...years ago now.

"BTW, they could also put someone at Speaker that is NOT a member of the house."

Really? Has that ever happened?

It's never happened, but there is a loophole in House rules that permits it.

Hastings has no business anywhere near FOUO let alone Top Secret. If a Defense Investigative Service agent looked at his clearance application, he'd laugh and throw it in the trash. But I forgot, Congresscritters don't need to be bothered with such paltry things.

Exactly why the next Contract With America has to emphasize that congress critters and senators alike will be subject to the same clearance rules which normal Americans would be subjected to. In a saner America, a Hastings would be permanently barred from public office and a Leaky Leahy would be hanged for treason.

"Remember, speaker is voted on by the entire house. We only need 12 democrats to vote with a unified republican vote and Boren could be speaker."

I was unaware of that, thanks for that info.

meaning that if one-third of the Blue Dogs and the Republicans combine, Boren would be the next speaker.

I thought it was the Majority Party (Democratic Caucus) alone that choose the Speaker

It sounds great, but is fatally flawed. The Republicans of the '80s had three things the Republicans of today lack:

1. Guts.
2. Imagination.
3. Leadership.

Today's Republicans are a pale imitation of Republicans of yesteryear.

They pick their own leaders, and the committee assignments.

Boren can't change that, but he's threatening to run against Pelosi if she doesn't put some good hawks into positions of leadership to show our enemies that we are not surrendering.

I would be pleased if she takes him up on the offer, and also pleased if she rejects it and he succeeds in winning the speakership.

I seriously want our troops to know we are not giving up on them.

Boren is a decent man.

He doesn't have a chance in hell.
