My top three picks are Pataki, Tancredo, and Huckabee in no particular order. I like Duncan Hunter and Newt Gingrich as well. But on the ballot that got a gateway timeout I put Pataki as my first choice.

McCain is unacceptable, if it was McCain and Hillary I would need a lot of councelling to vote for McCain. I would vote for Brownback if he was the one that is nominated, but I hope he isn't. I can't remember who else was on the ballot and that site won't load for me right now. See ya tonight.

Just finished having a conversation with my boss over this exact topic. I'll say here what I said to him, "I love Newt and think he is the most clear minded, articulate, and intelligent conservative out there; however, he has way too much baggage to be elected." Guliani will never get the Evangelicals because he is pro abortion-and whether some here want to accept it or not, the Republicans need the Evangelical vote. In my mind, this leaves Romney. I'd like to think Newt could do it, but I think not.

If John McCain wins the GOP nomination in 2008 the results will be same as when Bob Dole won the nomination in 1996!

It will be another wipeout for the GOP.

The USA will become a true socialistic state! With the influx of illegal aliens, Hugo Chavez will become are Presidente for life & the Spanish language will be our national language.

Of course she does but she has the MSM on her side, she is a woman and we have millions of voters that make a decision emotionally and just vote for the default Democrat nominee. We also have a country of a lot of single men and women who are 60 / 40 democrat. We also have a lot of new immigrant citizens that are 80 / 20 democrat and do not care about Hillary's baggage. That is why the baggage on our side becomes way more important because it has to with stand a lot more scrutiny and Hillary's baggage will be a non issue to the MSM who think they won the elections this week and have abandoned all pretenses of objectivity.

I absolutely think Newt is the true conservative out there but elections are not won by appealing to people on FR. It is the great unwashed that has to be swayed.

I think you have nailed it. Romney has no personal life baggage, is a great communicator, charismatic for the touchy feel crowd and ideologically sound. His link with MA is an issue and the fact that he is a Mormon may not play well in the South. He has 2 years to fix that though and he would make a great president. He would handily beat Hillary if he survives the primaries.

Newt's domestic life has more baggage than Samsonite, and he's not a warm and charming person. He is incredibly intelligent and has a clear and concise vision, but I think he's a better advisor than candidate. He is not the next Ronald Reagan, but he's a no-brainer for the next Bill Buckley.

Newt is the picture next to "ideologue" in the dictionary. Every political movement needs those, but as supporting troops, not as candidates. As Buckley was to Reagan, as Coulter and Limbaugh have been to Bush 43, so Gingrich will be to ...

I agree totally. Newt is very articulate and will clean anyone's clock in debate. Logically he will win every case but in the new Oprsh-fied nation we live in he will not click emotionally as well. In MA where I live, Deval Patrick won the governor's seat handily even though even liberals disagreed with his positions and agreed with is very articulate and conservative opponent, Kerry Healey ! All because Deval connected better with people. We have a mass of politically uneducated emotional voters out there and FR style logic does not work with them, you simply need a candidate that can connect with them. A large % of people do not vote the issues, they vote the likeability of the candidate, scary but true.

Bravo! I have a better chance of winning the presidency than Newt. Newt has a personality that will turn off 75% of the voting public. He may be a great thinker and conservative but his style will shut down the republicans flat.

In a nationwide election, Newt is simply unelectable. Hillary would trounce him, and so the sooner we can pop this particular bubble, the better it will be for our propsetcs in 2008.

Don't get me wrong, I like Newt. He's a damn fine historian and educator, but he has no political clout anymore and no nationwide support base. We need a relatively young, articulate, solidly Conservative governor with no personal baggage or skeletons in his closet to rally around and to carry the Conservative banner forward in 2008.

I watched John Boehner (Ohio Congressman) for about 10 minutes on a talk show a few weeks ago. He's smart, telegenic, well spoken and on message. He should be on the list.
