Welcome to GOP Bloggers' fifth 2008 Straw Poll. Our straw poll last month tallied over 15,000 votes.
Like our last poll, you get to pick which candidates you find acceptable and which ones you don't and you get to choose which candidate is your first choice for the GOP nomination in 2008.

I love Newt! Even though I don't think he cccould win.
Remind me, do we want the "...the great mases of 'moderates'"?
I don't want them...but to win a national election, someone has to win them or not frighten them off. I think latest breakdown is that the country is 34% conservative, 21% liberal, and 45% independent/moderate/other. I think this 45% are mostly pragmatists that can be persuaded with the right candidate.
From what I've seen of Romney, he's quick on his feet, intelligent, well-spoken, and has a sense of humor, as well as having conservative stances on the major issues.
Newt would be ideal in the perfect world, but in the real world I think it's a longshot. McCain is barely acceptable, but also potentially disasterous as many conservatives would stay home (could be another Bob Dole type loss). Guiliani would be ok, but he's way more liberal than Romney. Allen's done for now, maybe in 12 years.
Thanks for the Romney link. Having a discussion with a good, conservative, intelligent, friend today and he was asking my opinion as to who we could put up against Hillary and I mentioned Romney to get a reaction and he "had heard the name" but didn't know who exactly he was. This was hard to imagine but now I have some info he wanted to become acquainted with Romney. He totally trusts my opinions and is now very interested. We have some work but from the looks of the gopbloggers poll, Romney has the hightest percentage of Total Votes. He's certainly an articulate and shart guy. We'll see. Thanks again.
How very thoughtful of you to supply me with information on Governor Romney!! I will do my homework on this matter of our next president. I'll also try to stay in touch with you regarding any questions I may have. I certainly appreciate the time you took to answer my questions in detail.

Nancee,
Sure. I haven't made up my mind 100% (maybe some better presidential candidates will emerge), but if I had to vote for someone today, I'd vote for Romney. It will be interesting to see if he can break through the McCain & Guiliani barrier.
I know what you mean, of course, but I see it a little differently. Because I don't think either of the aforementioned will ever be able to garnish enough votes individually, I see each of them as their own respecitves barriers to that which they allegedly want. Were Giuliani to have the right positions on social issues, there would be no problem here (for me). I could vote for him. In the McCain case however, because of his betrayeral in dreaming up the 14 senators to oppose the "constitutional option", and because I just have never really like or trusted him, I can not ever vote for him.
Someone else here has pointed me to Romney and suggested that I take a serious look. I am going to do my homework on his positions on the various issues. Also, I most certainly agree with your statement:
"...(maybe some better presidentail candidates will emerge),..."
Anyway it's good to know what you and others are thinking and doing. It's provocative and therefore extremely helpful.
Nancee
Nancee, thanks for the ping.
Just throwing in another requirement:
We need somebody who will not give in to or make nice with the liberal press. When, not if, the MSM come after him/her, an immediate answer and confrontation must occur. A proof of the allegation or an immediate apology on page one or the TV equivalent is demanded of the media outlet. If it's not complied with, an immediate filing of a defamation-of-character lawsuit with the stipulation of no settlement out of court will be accepted.
The MSM should be taught a lesson not to go after Conservatives without a price to pay. We have to set a precedent and push the media to be fair.
It goes without saying, we demand squeaky-clean candidates to be our presidents.
I didn't expect to "see" you this weekend!
"If it's not complied with, an immediate filing of a damation-of-character lawsuit with the stipulation of no settlement out of court will be accepted."
Would you like to work for Rick Santorum after he rests up a bit?
"It goes without saying, we demand squeaky-clean candadates to be our presdients."
AMEN!!!

BUMP!!!
Good point. The same Birkenstock wearing, granola-eating, Volvo-driving brand of liberalism that lays waste to the Northeast, afflicts, to varying degrees, the Northern states from coast to coast. That is because these states were first settled by New Englanders. Take 10 liberals each from in Vermont, Ithaca, Madison, and Portland, and put them in different rooms and you'd be hard pressed to tell which room you were in.
That Romney has demonstrated the ability to win State office in MA does not mean that he could crack any of these Northeast bastions in 2008, but it does bespeak his ability to win in a wide swath of competitive Northern states, such as WI, MI, OH, OR, IA, MN, & NH.
Vote bump
Rudy or Romney are the best bets. I think fiscal conservatism and the WOT are much more important than social conservatism. All we need a candidate to do is commit to judges like Scalia, Roberts, Alito, and Thomas. You don't have to be a social conservative to want conservative judges and that's the whole ball of wax. In fact, strict doctrine of social conservatism IMHO is not a winner.
Voted and bumped.
Then, you think none of it is very important, because without the social conservatism, you cannot win elections.
