Red but not Republican
Washington Times ^ | November 9, 2006 | Terence P. Jeffrey

It was almost the perfect television ad for a conservative candidate, hitting cultural issues certain to drive a wedge between Middle American voters and liberal Democrats. "A lifetime of Hoosier values, a southwest Indiana native, Brad Ellsworth knows faith and family comes first," said the narrator. Photos flashed on the screen showing Mr. Ellsworth as a little boy, with his wife and daughter, chatting with seniors, carrying a shotgun in his hunting gear, working with teenage students and wearing the uniform of a law enforcement officer. "Opposes abortion, and supports traditional marriage," the narrator continued, "a hunter who supports the Second Amendment, who will fight to protect our kids from violence and filth on TV and the Internet

These guys should be easy to defeat in '08.

That is unless they actually deliver on their stances. Just to be safe, the local Republican central committees should post their rhetoric on the office bulletin board and issue a score card in '08.

My guess is these guys will be castrated by the Lady Of The House in short order.

Problem is, they won't be held accountable for "delivering on their stances", only for the votes they actually cast. They should be looked at for how much influence they exert over their party's leadership, and whether they actually pass some "conservative" legislation (or defeat some proposed liberal legislation). Instead, they'll get "cred" for their "good intentions", while their leadership moves a leftist agenda down the field. Hell, if they're "conservative" enough, the RNC may give them a pass and not run a serious candidate against them (big mistake).

"Considering how quickly even a lot of supposedly 'conservative' Republicans lined up at the pork trough, no."

That's why I find it ironic. A bit of the pot calling the kettle black.

I think that conservative Democrats will have to play it straighter than Republicans have had to in the past. Conservative Democrats pose much more of a threat to the future of the GOP than the leftists do. Hence, conservative Democrats will find themselves under much more scrutiny.

And his first vote in Congress will be for the pro-abortion, anti-gun, pro-homosexual marriage nancy pelosi and Ellsworth will tow her voting line.

Some voters are just suckers.

I doubt that. They will strongarmed by the leftist goons in the democrat party. Actually probably not strongarmed but gladly go along with the agenda.

And their first vote in the House for Nancy Pelosi as Speaker ain't going to help.

Ellsworth articulated conservative positions even better than Hostettler did. And he signed Grover Norquist's no new tax pledge.

And gave liberal nutjob Pelosi the speaker's gavel.

Just sayin.'

This group is fickled and not beholden to any particular political party.

They will be beholden to pelosi.

Why don't you take a walk down to your local used car lot. You seem to enjoy the experience of being snookered.

"history supports this. beltway disease."

I'm going to respectfully disagree with you. I think that in most cases you'd be right to expect that, but what we're looking at right now is a different dynamic.

Your earlier comments were spot on: DINO trumped RINO and conservatism sells. The Democratic party like the Republican party exists to get it's members elected to political office. The Democratic party is very interested in winning political office in the future. If my party believes that running ideological conservatives in certain areas is the best way to achieve that goal, then they're going to do it.

Those conservative Democrats that have been elected are going to find themselves under incredible pressure not to screw it up for the Democratic party. And then there's the GOP to consider. Conservative Democrats pose much more of a threat to the future of the GOP than the leftists do. Hence, conservative Democrats will find themselves under much more scrutiny from the GOP as well.

When political parties compete for the conservative vote, we win.

Yeah, but she isn't getting a free hand by any stretch of the imagination. It'll be fun to watch Spkr. Pelosi sputter and gasp as she's forced to support some conservative initiatives.

There will be snowmen in hell the day pelosi supports anything that could considered a conservative position.

One of the better "who/why we lost" summaries I've seen in the last few days.

Oh she won't like it one bit. And the words will stick in her throat when she does it. But she'll voice support for some conservative positions.

Agreed. Ellsworth also advocates a minimum wage increase and blasted Hostettler in ads for supporting "Big Oil", and will undoubtedly support every union whim.

Another poster descibed the "conservative" Democrats as Christian socialists, which is an accurate description, I think.

I'll bet you that she would rather overdose on botox than voice support for a conservative position.

Interesting points.

I have said that the only way to have conservatism win is to eliminate the democrats which would open a vacume for a conservative party to go up agains the republican party and then the debate becomes conservative position A vs conservative position B.

What you are saying is correct, we may now be entering a time when the democrats have realized they need to be the "new conservative party" or the will disappear.

Have to flesh that out a bit more. You make good points.

I don't disagree that some of these new "blue dogs" are actually "blue Bolshevik wolves in sheep's clothing", nor do I believe that the Left-Wing Leadership won't work some deals (such as the old trick of evenly apportioning the number of times the "blue dogs" have to vote for leftist initiatives, so they can still hang on to some "conservative" cred), but just ask yourself: when was the last time that Dorgan, Kent Conrad, Max Baucas and a number of other "go along to get along" Red State Dems faced serious opposition?

Oh, don't doubt for a second that she'll hate it. And her "support" will set a new benchmark for insincerity. But when all is said and done, ambition will trump ideology.
