Red but not Republican

It was almost the perfect television ad for a conservative candidate, hitting cultural issues certain to drive a wedge between Middle American voters and liberal Democrats. "A lifetime of Hoosier values, a southwest Indiana native, Brad Ellsworth knows faith and family comes first," said the narrator. Photos flashed on the screen showing Mr. Ellsworth as a little boy, with his wife and daughter, chatting with seniors, carrying a shotgun in his hunting gear, working with teenage students and wearing the uniform of a law enforcement officer. "Opposes abortion, and supports traditional marriage," the narrator continued, "a hunter who supports the Second Amendment, who will fight to protect our kids from violence and filth on TV and the Internet

The temporary new face of the democrat party. Can they govern electing anti-war republicans as democrats, or will these people swing back to being republicans once they get their way on the war and the democrats refuse to give them any power or say in how things are done?

Rise of the anti-Iraq-war conservatives.

These candidates (including Sen. Webb) are one-note candidates. After the war in Iraq is done, they will have no rationale for being Democrats.

Southern Indiana is very conservative. Ellsworth articulated conservative positions even better than Hostettler did. And he signed Grover Norquist's no new tax pledge.

Just sayin'...

Not when Pelosi gets done with him, he'll become a moonbat just like the rest of them.

Face it Indiana, you got hoodwinked, you've been bamboozled, you got taken.

He will have to continue to hew that line.this is a 60% republican district that continued to re-elect one of the class of "94's" light weight for 6 terms. Indiana is also the preeminent coat tail state. It is predominately Republican like this district at the state level and when the GOP wins big it can easily carry him out.
Also in 6 years redistricting will be done. Terre Haute can be removed from the district making it even more Republican. Also if they want to get cute and baron Hill is still around they can move Evansville and Ellsworth into the 9th district. He had better watch himself. The three Dem's just elected in this state are not likely to last beyond three terms.
In south Bend presuming the GOP has control of the state House.they can remove Michigan city and Kokomo from the second district and severely damage Donnelly . If they really want to be cute they can take a scalpel to the first district and cut away Hammond,Gary,East Chicago and a Small strip across the rest of lake county and Porter and throw in Michigan City and south Bend (and Donnelly) for one big Dem' rotten district.

We have to get away from this color scheme. The left needs to be red for historical reasons. And it was until the MSM pulled off this ahistorical scam in 2000.

I find it fascinating how quickly conservative Republicans assume that conservative Democrats will suddenly switch to socialism the minute they get a taste of power in Washington.

Ironic, no?

It will be interesting to see how many of the Brad Ellsworths that got elected hang on to their principles or will sellout to the SF witch for power or reelection.

My bet is 90% of them will be rabid moonbats by 2008.

He has a chance to change his party, or he will vote for this woman to be the power leader in the House:

The San Fransicso Liberal has a very left-wing record:
• Pelosi voted against every Republican tax cut.
• Pelosi voted for the largest tax increase in history.
• Pelosi voted 19 times against eliminating the death tax.
• Pelosi voted five times for raising gasoline taxes
• Pelosi is so pro-high taxes she was one of only 27 members to vote against tax relief for poor neighborhoods in the inner city (presumably including her constituents in San Francisco ).
• Pelosi voted against the historic Welfare Reform Bill and later voted against its reauthorization.
• Pelosi voted against protecting the right to say "one nation under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance.
• Pelosi voted against requiring that voters be identified so we could ensure only legal citizens are voting.
• Pelosi voted against requiring English on ballots.
• Pelosi refused to side with homeowners against the Kelo decision that allows cities to seize private property for profitable ventures, even though 365 members voted to stop cities from taking private property.
• Pelosi has voted at least 12 times against the death penalty.
• Pelosi was one of only 67 House members to vote against the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
• Pelosi has voted at least eight times against banning partial-birth abortion, at least three times against the Unborn Victims of Violence Act (Laci's law), and scored a perfect 100 percent rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America.
• Pelosi voted against a bill that would "[b]ar the transportation of a minor girl across state lines to obtain an abortion without the consent of a parent, guardian or judge."
• Pelosi voted at least 31 times for using local or federal taxpayer dollars to fund abortions.
• Pelosi voted against building a fence on the border to protect America from terrorists.
• Before 9/11, Pelosi repeatedly voted to cut intelligence (in 1993 by $500 million) and after 9/11 she has still voted to cut intelligence (in 2004 she voted to withhold 25 percent of intelligence funds).
• When you ask why we were not more prepared for 9/11, remember that six months before Sept. 11, 2001, Pelosi voted to decrease proposed defense spending by $65 billion.
• The next time you think about North Korean nuclear tests and North Korean efforts to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile to reach the United States , remember that in 2002, Pelosi voted for an amendment to the FY 2003 Defense authorization that would block FY 2003 funding for space-based missile defense programs.
• Pelosi led a faction of 124 House Democrats who voted against final passage of the Patriot Act's reauthorization.
• Pelosi voted against the $87-billion Iraq/Afghanistan supplemental that included extra money for body armor for our soldiers.
• Pelosi voted against creation of Homeland Security Department.
• Pelosi was one of only 33 members to vote against prohibiting U.S. citizens and companies from conducting any financial transaction with countries that have been identified by the State Department as active sponsors of terrorism.
• In 2004, Pelosi voted against House passage of the intelligence overhaul bill, which reorganized 15 intelligence agencies under one Director of National Intelligence.

"The three Dem's just elected in this state are not likely to last beyond three terms."

Yikes, I consider that bad news. Look, a blue state like Mass. can *shut out* Republicans! If we cant carry more Indiana districts, we will have consigned ourselves to a minority status.

Look at it this way - we need a top 20 target list of takeovers in 2008 to win back the House.
We need to put all three IN districts on that list....

What are odds of recruiting people to beat these new Dem incumbents?

It is important that the Republicans realize that conservatism didn't lose on Tuesday. George Bush lost the middle of the road conservative leaning voters(security moms, soccer moms, suburban middle class, not the true conservative Republican base)on Tuesday and took the party down with him. It happened to Clinton in 94 (when he lost the same voters), it happened to GWB Tuesday.

This group is fickled and not beholden to any particular political party. They are mostly fiscally conservative, family oriented and socially moderate. They can't be swayed with flag burning amendents and while they vote in favor of Gay marriage bans at the state level, they don't believe it is federal issue. As a group they are mostly pro-life with exception, but saw no reason for the federal grandstanding in the Schaivo case and aren't sure they want Roe overturned. They have historically voted pocketbook, but since 9/11 have added national security to the list. As a group they support the administration on the wiretaps, interrogation issues and fighting terrorism, but have grave misgiving about why we are in Iraq and where our Iraq policy is headed. They are strong on illegal immigration, jobs and cultural issues. They sense a change in the cultural that they are not totally comfortable with centered on job outsourcing and what they see as a growing Hispanic influence even in small towns from the midwest to the deep south. Their votes are up for grabs every election cycle and they will vote for the candidates that listens to and addresses their concerns the best. We can win these people on a regular basis with a sound fiscal policy, a strong, sensible, defensible foreign policy and a strong cultural message.

I know these people. I live with them, work with them and talk to them everyday. They are well educated, hardworking, middle to upper middle class, and definitely not policy wonks or political junkies, but they are natural Republicans, and if we offer them a viable choice they will almost always vote that way. However when we govern as liberal democrats and they don't see much difference between the parties they can easily be swayed to vote for the other side. Add this group to our conservative base and the fiscally conservative, socially more liberal young urban voters and we become a strong majority. Kiss off any of these groups espcially the base and the right leaning moderates and we are toast.

Religion Spat In Air Force Becomes Issue In ’06 Election
12-02-05

Republican Rep. John Hostettler of Indiana, for one, accused Obey and another Democrat who had offered a similar measure, Rep. Steve Israel of New York, of “denigrating and demonizing Christians” and of waging a “war on Christianity in America.”

So far, Hostettler’s Democratic opponent, Vanderburgh County Sheriff Brad Ellsworth, hasn’t raised the Air Force issue. His staffers have said that this is because there is plenty of fertile ground to hoe in Hostettler’s recent votes against foreign aid and resolutions expressing solidarity with Israel.

“We are finding support in the Jewish community not only locally, but in Indianapolis, Chicago and other places across the country, because they’re not happy with Rep. Hostettler’s record on Israel,” said Ellsworth’s campaign manager, Brad Howser.
