The archbishop of St. Louis lamented that "We have lost a significant battle for the protection of human life" after voters in Missouri approved a measure protecting stem-cell research. The Missouri legislation allows any federally allowed stem-cell research and treatment to occur in the state.
"The citizens of Missouri have succumbed to a false hope created by a campaign which has played on the desire of us all to help those suffering from deadly diseases and serious injuries," said Archbishop Raymond Burke in a statement after the passage of Amendment 2. "Over the last several months," the prelate said, "the Catholic Church has had the privilege of praying and working with many individuals and groups of faith and good will to speak the truth about the intrinsic evils of human cloning and the destruction of human embryos for research enshrined in Amendment 2.
"We made great progress in helping the citizens of Missouri realize the confusion and deception of the language of Amendment 2. We have failed, however, to overcome the formidable resources of its proponents." The state constitutional amendment attracted wide attention after actor Michael J. Fox, who has Parkinson's disease, appeared in a television advertisement supporting the measure.
A bellwether
Archbishop Burke, 58, contended: "Missouri's Amendment 2 will come to be regarded as the bellwether of human cloning, and will sadly divert attention and public funds from successful and completely ethical umbilical cord blood and adult stem-cell research. "It will further erode respect for all human life and for procreation as the way new human life is to come into the world. Moreover, the provisions of the Amendment will make available to certain biotech companies the money of the taxpayers of Missouri for intrinsically immoral research, whether or not the research ever brings about the promised life-saving cures."
The St. Louis prelate continued: "The election campaign for the passage of Amendment 2 has shown us all how deeply rooted the culture of death is in our society. "With regard to stem-cell research, the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of St. Louis stands by its unparalleled tradition of compassionate health care and pledges continued support of ethical stem-cell research."
We are so sorry to have lost this one. It's just not a thing you "get over".
Well, I'm sure Claire McCaskle will have Michael J. Fox healed in no time, now that Jim Talent has been defeated. Missourians aren't very smart to have fallen for the old snake oil salesman's pitch.
I don't think this amendment "protects" anything. It authorizes the manufacturing of more Missourians by way of cloning. The old way got boring for them.
"It's just not a thing you "get over"."
No way, the ramifications are just way too scary.
IT wasn't just false hope that Missourians fell for - they fell for a false and misleading title, and burried language that actually changes nothing of the stem cell laws, but suddenly legalizes human cloning in the state. Just ask how many of the useful idiots who voted for this actually know or admit that they knew about the cloning part.
While at it, we might as well ask them to name a single successful cure or therapy developed from embryonic stem cells...
Tell Branson (isn't that their big gambling/tourist area)
that your vacation dollars are going elsewhere.) Thanks to the abject stupidity of their voters, Massive amounts of ACORN Voter fraud, Claire McCaskill's win with a minimum wage issue on the ballot, the fact that she thinks Bush controls the price of gas and the embarrasing use of Canadien Michael J. Fox's battle with Parkinson's disease as an "Oprah moment.
Your money can be better spent in Red States, happened in FL in 2000 and it had an effect!

Those citizens need to be reminded EVERY year that there have been NO results after all the money that has been spent, and that ADULT stem cells are continuing to be successful each day.
Why punish Branson? Did the folks who run the entertainment venues there support this measure? Did they work to get it passed? If not, then they shouldn't be held accountable.
Because they have a big enough constituency to run to the Legislature and tell 'em they want "Do Overs". Don't think for one minute those folks didn't turn out for the successful "minimum wage" b/s They are mostly Unionized!
How the hell else are we supposed to "Wake up" America?
It's either by our pocketbooks or the terrorists do it for us!
We should do it in every state that bought the Drive by Media drivel, two years is a short period of time. This last election could end up killing us all.
Wait a minute.
What happens when we get a law passed, a referendum passed, or an amendment passed?
The left ties it up in a lawsuit. Look at partial birth abortion--tied up for three years, and just being heard by the Supreme Court.
Well, why can't a lawsuit be filed over the confusing wording of the amendment, over the deceptive advertising,of anything that would tie this up and prevent it from going into effect.
This buys time for a media campaign for the truth to gin up and get Missourians to get their legislators behind making a law that nullifies the amendment, or makes the political landscape such that the amendment never goes into effect.
It can be done. The lefties do this all the time.
The issue is so important that it can't be allowed to go into effect, especially since it can be readily proven that voters were deceived by the wording of the amendment and words used by the supporters of the amendment which were misleading.
Lefties get the ACLU;why can't we do somethignwith probono lawyers from Missouri who are prolife.
Where there is a will, there is a way.
What say you, Missouri? Show us.
