Markus Wolf, on where they got their recruits:
"...some of the most important sources were in the Foreign Office.
and
There were links through the [student protest] movement in 1968, where [West German] establishment youngsters joined us as a way of protesting against the state they were living in. ... One example concerns someone from the 1968 movement who wanted to protest against the injustice he saw in the West. Another [agent] who found him said: "If you genuinely want to do something against the country and against the establishment, there are other options. Let's go over to Berlin and do some talking about it." And then his further development was controlled, from his university studies up to a top position in NATO. ...

Seriously, though, even though he was an evil piece of work, there's something to be said for any intel guy who actually takes his secrets to the grave. What a concept.Yeah, I'll give him props for that much.

Nothing better illustrated the destructiveness of Mr Wolfs activities: his greatest spying triumph directly harmed the interests of the communist state he was supposedly trying to defend.Never trust a spy. Especially when they're on "your" side.

Russia pays nostalgic tribute to E.German spymaster - 10 Nov 2006 - Russia paid lavish tribute to dead East German spymaster Markus Wolf on Friday, playing up his Russian background and recalling past espionage triumphs over the United States and its allies.
"The memory of this wonderful, steely person will forever stay in our hearts," the Defence Ministry newspaper Red Star said.
