LEXANDRIA, Va. Two days after American voters spoke, Virginia Republican Sen. George Allen made their decision final when he conceded his Senate battle to challenger Jim Webb, officially completing a Democratic sweep of Congress. Allen conceded the race at 3:15 p.m. ET during a press conference Thursday in Alexandria, Va. "Sometimes wins, political or otherwise, can blow the leaves off branches or even break limbs but a deep-rooted tree
will regrow in the next season," Allen said during his concession speech. The voters of Virginia have spoken, he said, "and I respect their decision."

Are Allen's backers giving up on him? Do you expect him to give up?
Shame on Allen, shame on the Republican party leadership who asked for him to do this.
Obviously you've never read any of his stuff ~ get over the awards he earned as a young man ~ as an old man he's rotted his brain out.
So, we now have Webb and Tester, both conservative "democrats" in the Senate. And we have "blue-dog" democrats elected to the House.
We call Snowe and Collins Rinos. We will the DU call these people? Certainly not Dinos.
On the other hand the guy stalking him with the camera cut his hair exactly the same way as another South Indian origin fellow who shot 20 people up in Montreal a few weeks ago.
Where antisemitism was allowed to rear its head (like in Virginia), the guy with Jewish ancestors lost (Allen), and when racism was allowed, the blackman lost (as in Ohio).
The Dems have not only been treating blacks more and more like they were just hands on a big plantation, they've allowed antisemitism to fill the weblogs that speak for them.
Just like old times in the 1920s if you ask me.
"Allen's real raw deal, he is a good guy but now has this stigma to haunt him."
Frankly there is not much stigma... he made small mistakes that the biased media, especially the WashPost magnified into big mistakes.
Yes, he should have won by 10 points, but Webb is an odd duck - called a 'neo-confederate' by some - who couldn't be pegged as liberal ... and the Democrat liberals were willing to vote anybody in their zeal to beat Bush.
Allen can and should try to go after the Senate seat in 2008. He is good and he is popular, and it may well be a different environment in 2008 after 2 years of Democrats screwing up things.
"Webb won primarily because of the macaca incident, which served to further fuel the Washington Post's jihad on George Allen. Webb ran on no particular issue and his campaign was rather dull and boring - commercials consisted mostly of "George Allen = George Bush" and the like."
I agree. I also think that the Dems were looking for the exact right vehicle to defeat republicans on war in Iraq, and a non-liberal anti-Iraq-war military man was their best shot. Allen would have beaten any conventional democrat that ran IMHO.
On this however ...
"I have never come across a book that contains a description of pedophilia or incest (let alone both)." ... it must have backfired on Allen, he had a close lead in mid-October but end of October Webb pulled ahead ... compare with eg Corker.
Go figure. Democrats must not mind porn writers in the Senate. Or maybe it smacked of below-the-belt (you see, only the Democrats and media are allowed to bring up irrelevent old cr8p and call it 'news').
In 2000, Allen won by 4 points against Robb.
Yes, he should have done better, but he is a good politician who can and should get back in the game, so long as he, like other Republican leaders, learns from this year.
"Webb is a patriot"
Sorry "patriot" and "endorsed by Hillary" doesnt compute.
Malfunction malfunction malfunction.
"If the Dems don't act like grown ups on National Security, Webb will have the choice of either repudiating everything he has ever stood for, or telling the Dem leadership to pound sand."
Tell him to switch parties now and save America the trouble!!!
Tester is a raving liberal.
I heard on ABC radio news: Webb also stated today that he thought we could have a diplomatic resolution of the war in Iraq. Read: negotiate with terrorists.
Allen, though, is 14 years younger than Webb. He'd have barely made it into the draft, and then only at the tailend of the war.
He ended up getting fewer years of draft deferment than Webb, or me for that matter.
And your point on hanging around with sorority girls was what? Certainly Webb got his share, and probably girls you knew, or wished you knew (back when he was sane) ~ but now he's on his third known wife.
You simply can't win this one. Allen didn't dodge the draft. I didn't dodge the draft. Webb could have exposed himself to greater risk by joining the Marines earlier, but he didn't.
It was a very long war, with many different phases, and the Democrats were totally responsible for it and made all the mistakes anyone could ever make. No one who served in the military in that period could possibly be a patriot and a Democrat today.
The Democrats regaining control of the Senate was a misnomer. The Democrats have always controlled the Senate. For a while there were more Republicans that Democrats but the Democrats, thanks to a number of RINOs were always in control. The Republicans jumped[I would like to use another word]when they said "jump". They jumped to the height the Democrats specified and danced to the tune the Democrats called.
Why thank you Minnesota John...and I'm sorry that you're so bitter about the election. I think there is one thing we can agree on however, Allen ran a particularly poor campaign. It is good, though, that he did the respectable thing and concede as we here in Virginia did not want to undergo what happened in Florida in 2000. Have a nice night!
This is for those who buy the story that Webb resigned his position as Navy Secretary to protest budget cuts or because he thought Reagan was "too soft."
In officialdom, there is typically a stated reason for events, but it is often not the real reason. A politican will often say that he is leaving office or opting out of a race to "spend more time with his family." One has to be very naive to believe that this stated reason is the real reason.
For years, the official story has been that Webb left his position as Secretary of the Navy after only 10 months to protest the budget cuts. Is this the real reason or a cover story? I refer you to Webb's close friend, Mackubin Thomas Owens. Earlier this year, he penned a piece about Webb. He didn't describe his abrupt departure as Navy Secretary as a protest over budget cuts. He indicated Webb left because of clashes between himself and Frank Carlucci, Secretary of Defense. The way Webb handled himself at the time--leaving a letter of resignation on someone's desk rather than informing Carlucci in person--was considered classless and suggested a lot of hostility toward Secretary Carlucci.

Thanks for the article, its the most positive thing I've read about Webb in a long time.
That may all be true but my point stands...it was a deperate play by Allen and backfired.
Listen Allen is prolly a good guy .....bot when he became a senator he like the rest of his GOP buddies were spending money like it was going out of style.
Tons of FR's were saying how he was POTUS material and I kept sayin unless he grows up and stops the cowboy boot wearin good ol boy shtick he's gonna get painted as a mini-W and get creamed. W has a 38% approval rating and the voters ain't buyin that model again...He should of hired me.
The "Gang of 14" endangered the continued existence of the Republic. We must never forget them. They must be driven from office and off our shores.
