WASHINGTON The night began as a squeaker, but it led to a new House speaker.
In a historic political evening, Democrats swept Republicans out of power in the House of Representatives for the first time since the 1994 Republican revolution that made Newt Gingrich the speaker. Control of the Senate was hanging in the balance with the George Allen-Jim Webb race in Virginia too close to call with more than 99 percent of the vote counted.
Two years after a decisive election victory for President Bush and Republicans, Democrats picked up more than the 15 seats they needed to recapture control of the 435-seat House for the first time since 1994.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi of California in line to become the first woman speaker in history said as the returns rolled in, "Democrats support change. Democrats propose a new direction for all Americans, not just the privileged few."
"We are on the brink of a great Democratic victory," she predicted earlier in the evening.
Democrats needed to gain six seats to reclaim control of the 100-seat Senate for the first time in four years, and so far had taken three seats from Republicans.
Pelosi, 66, appears certain to be elected House speaker by fellow Democrats when the new 110th Congress convenes in January, replacing Dennis Hastert, an Illinois Republican.
Under U.S. law, the speaker is second in the line of succession to the presidency, behind only the vice president.

"Madame" Speaker Pelosi has loads of experience giving speeches oral acts. She'll whip the "House" into shape...
Pelosi,666... They forgot a number.
Wouldn't it be a hoot should she get herself sandbagged by the boys in the back room? Talk shows have kicked around the idea she might not be the shoo in the MSM think.
Has she been elected Speaker yet??? I thought Hoyer and Murtha were running for speaker.
Maybe the GOP should cross party lines and vote for Murtha for speaker.
Go to hell, Farah you Democrat shrill.
Yep, Farah's orgasming, no doubt.
How sexist to force the first female speaker to have to clean the House. Don't they have custodians! [end libnut reaction]
"Send in the clowns.....send in the clowns....don't worry, they're here.
Hoyer and Murtha were running for Majority leader not Speaker. Hoyer claims he doesnt want to be speaker. i suppose he likes being 2nd to on of the worlds greatest Shrews. i dont give the democrats a lot of credit for being smart, but I cant see even them electing Pelosi Speaker of the house third in line for the Presidency.
Perhaps in a Bizarro world,--and she would fit well in a Bizarro world too. She is a little bizarre looking. I guess she cant help that--so I shouldnt press on it. Its probably the fault of the Plastic surgeons. She should get in touch with John Edwards. We can all see she has an excellent case.
They could at least give her knee-pads as she kneels down to clean the pipes.
She's not dumb.
She chose early the "Culture of Corruption" theme but dropped it when the Jefferson and Reid matters came out. Also the leftish media was harping on Iraq because that can be milked for anti-America themes.
Turns out it was a winner, the exit polls said corruption was one of the most important motivations for voters, more than Iraq. Another issue was Congress in general, not "Bush".
I can guarantee you if there will be corruption investigations they will not include Jack Abramoff.
LOL!!
Farrah was for Pelosi before he was against her ...
1st lady speaker to clean House,....
She will make them move the furniture around too.
Now she can use her broom for something other than transportation.
Well, you know how it is... women tend to "clean house" before they have visitors... 'specially those with bundles of cash and bills they need passed.
Does anyone else find it funny how much the "progressive" media is embracing all the catch phrases for traditional wifey responsibilities for Pelosi's new position?
Is she going to "sweep" impeached Congressman Alcee Hastings out of the House? He is in line to be Intel Chairman.
