Hotline: Republicans Will Pressure Allen... Soon
Hotline/National Journal ^ | November 8, 2006

Posted on 11/08/2006 4:15:25 PM PST by RWR8189

Top Republicans in Washington will give Sen. George Allen a few days to take stock of his legal and political options before beginning to pressure him to concede to James Webb. Senior Republican officials and White House aides believe that Webb won the race. Several outside advisers to Allen want him to make the decision quickly; others in his campaign want to make sure that there's no chance a cache of new votes will turn up. One question: when will (will?) the AP call the race? [MARC AMBINDER]

"If Allen is still around over a month from now, has over 100 different attornies on the case, is asking that all chads with the slightest dimple be counted, and refusing to allow counties where Democrat votes might have been lost to be counted, we'll let Allen hear from us."

So far, this is the most reasonable statement I have seen.

I agree that there is no reason to quit yet.

indeed. we don't learn that to fight Dem fraud, you can't wait until election day to see it unfold. its too late by then.

all of us watching the Allen vote in real time last night, could see it coming. Allen ahead with 95%, 97%, 98, 99 - then, "poof" - Webb ahead and within an hour, he's claiming victory.

I'm a fight to the end conservative, but the end was yesterday, and Allen needs to concede.

We need to live by example, as painful as it is. It is truly a sign of character to lose like a man, not a democrat. Voters don't forget that sort of thing.

That is really interesting! I wonder if this happened to anyone else? I think if you vote provisional ballot they give you a number to call to check and be sure your vote was counted.

the "count" won't help Allen.

The canvassing might, if there were transcription errors. You never know. The race is simply too close to just fold until all the votes have been counted and canvassed.

Webb won with votes that came in with the last .5% that reported - I believe those votes were provisioinal ballots, cast in Dem district held back from reporting until they knew how many votes Webb needed to move ahead.

I don't think that is correct. I was watching the results come in last night. The last reporting precincts were mainly precincts from Democrat urban areas and the slightly-Democrat leaning Northern Virginia Loudoun and Prince William County suburbs. More than one precinct was out in many of those areas, especially in Loudoun County, Arlington and Richmond.

and since the Dems know it takes longer then that to mount any kind of real challenge to provisional ballots (this is not a "chad" based challenge) - then with that approach, we lose. if they know we don't have the stomach for a challenge like that, then their injection of vote fraud goes through.

Can you tell I am fed up with the Republican leadership at all levels? Day after day we have had no message -- great economic news and no comment to speak of from the WH or anyone else in leadership. You take it to your opponent and don't let them control the news cycles.

OK, forgive me - it was the last .9%

who was ahead with 99.1% reporting?

Office: U.S. Senate
Precincts Reporting: 2421 of 2443 (99.10%)
Registered Voters: 4,555,672 Total Voting: 2,305,173 Voter Turnout: 50.60 %
Candidates Party Vote Totals Percentage
G F Allen Republican 1,139,550 49.43%
J H Webb Jr Democratic 1,137,793 49.36%
G G Parker Independent Green 25,567 1.11%
Write Ins 2,263 0.10%
View Results by District Locality Total: 2,305,173

after that, the Dem closing push came through, and Webb was ahead.

this is how the Dems always play it.

But according to original article, they aren't trying to get him to shut down now. They are giving him time to gather information...and then if things aren't any different they aren't going to support those 100 different attornies.

IOW, they are supporting him at this point, but are anxious not to get too far behind the 8-ball when it comes to getting themselves organized in the Senate.

Methinks it looks like the Pubbies in charge wanted to hand one to the Dems??? Could it be lose now or lose worse later?
There is some strategery going on here.
They have had plenty to crow about, they have a sophisticated political machine, but have acted like geeks in a high school election... who don't know how to market their message.
Could it be they 'took a fall' for '08????

I know he was ahead but not by much but even he was behind by a few votes, there was a plan in place to contest the election so I just don't see the WH making these comments as they serve no useful purpose. Some people wanted him to throw in the towel and he sent Racicot down to FL.

We should have taken care of the fraud then, but no we didn't do anything and we still haven't. I think every election should have a paper trail because then you can have a recount and not depend on some computer program to insure integrity of voting.

I am a long time Bush supporter dating back to 1994 and have kept pretty quiet when I disagree but his comments today made me want to throw something at the TV. All this kumbyya nonsense is not what I wanted to hear today. Give a DemocRAT an inch and they take a mile.

"the end was yesterday"

At least let the votes be counted before you claim we Virginians should declare an election over LOL!

You don't understand the vote tabulating procedure in Virginia. Yesterday we had only a quick unofficial count.
It may be obvious before the official count is finished that one or the other has won, but honestly it isn't yet.

the fraud is mostly in any ballot that is paper - the electronic stuff, the mechanical machine tallies - is safe.

but paper ballots, and notably provisional ballots issued using paper - that's where the fraud is, because anyone can fill them out and stuff them through the machines.

I voted by paper ballot in Leesburg in Loudoun County. Folks were offered a choice of either paper or computer (no hanging chads...we took pens and bubbled in the ballots in privacy screens).

So who knows. :P

They obviously didn't get the message.

And what message would that be? The one that said "we prefer the liberal positions of the Democrats because we kicked all of the solid Conservatives out of the house," by chance?

Any valid reason to extend is reasonable IMO. If there is a reason to extend the challenge on the merits, I'm on board.

Hard rules aren't much help with fluid situations. All that we should ask for, is that the challenge be reasoned and thurough.

My guidelines were intended to infer that we have had to put up with quite a lot during important elections, and Allen has plenty of latitude before he starts butting up against a time limit.
