-SNIP-

But a source told NBC News’ military analyst Bill Arkin that prior to the election, Vice President Dick Cheney argued with other politicians over whether Rumsfeld should stay. White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten and others said Rumsfeld should be removed, the source said. Both sides agreed the decision would be made after the election, when Bush would make the final call based on how Republicans did.

According to the source, Bush agreed Rumsfeld should be removed after seeing election results favoring Democrats. Cheney then lost another argument, protesting Gates’ nomination as Rumsfeld’s replacement.

Rummy would be the first, second and third witness called in the "hearings" which will begin early Feb.

I feel bad for Rummy & Cheney.

Rummy's scalp was given for no damn good reason, and Cheney is now stuck under the Leadership of a President that has joined Pelosi.

Cheney's a legit conservative, it's not going to be fun. At least in the Congress they have the option of speaking out.

The problem with letting go of Rumsfeld is that any replacement has to pass the Pelosi sniff test, which means: POS.

Bush best not push this too far - Cheney could resign for health reasons in a flash, and just walk away from the mess that these next 2 years are going to bring.

Rumsfeld wouldn't fit in with the new 'New Tone'. Nethier will Cheney for that matter.

If it's true, it's a shame they had to wait until election results to decide what to do with Rumsfeld.

If he really needed to go, he should have gone before. If they were just looking for a sacrifice/scapegoat, they did the wrong thing.

I personally have a great deal of admiration and respect for Rummy. Think what it would be like to have a dad like that!

I sure agree with you on that. Before it's over we are going to miss him. Fine man and dedicated American.

Cheney has a target on him, no doubts about it. If he resigns, I will have lost all respect for Bush. Rummy leaving is bad enough.

as a society, we've got to get rid of the notion that if you don't win - and perfectly - you're incompetent and should be fired.

one of the political parties was going to win, does that mean the losing party strategist was incompetent?

in a war, it is impossible not to have casualties and collateral damage, does this mean the war is a failure and that it's leaders incompetent?

Rove can't work miracles.

"The problem with letting go of Rumsfeld is that any replacement has to pass the Pelosi sniff test, which means: POS."

I see the real problem with throwing Rumsfeld under the bus, is that it was not a decision based on who's best for the job, instead, it was politics. I also don't think there IS a better man for the job. We'd be lucky, at this point, to get someone close to his caliber.

I wish it was the other way around...let Bush resign and Cheney finish the next two years as POTUS with Lynn or Rummy as VP.

Rove has always been over-rated. Always. We should have crushed Kerry in 2004.

San Diego-area GOP Congressman Duncan Hunter (outgoing chair for House Armed Services) called Rummy and encouraged him to stay before the announcement. Apparently Rummy believed with a Democrat majority, he would be a distraction from the needed work to be done.
