WASHINGTON -- President Bush said Wednesday Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld is stepping down and former CIA Director Robert Gates will take over at the Pentagon and in prosecuting the war in Iraq.
Rumsfeld, architect of an unpopular war in Iraq, intends to resign after six stormy years at the Pentagon, Republican officials said.

Probably not the worst thing that could happen, and I like Rummy.
Since the next two years will be nothing but being hauled in front of House Committees headed by Weasel Waxman and Jihad Conyers, we need someone who can be dedicated full time to prosecuting the war.

it was probably just a joke.

I am suddenly thinking of starting a Burqua franchise store as our 'chattel' will need appropriate clothing soon.

Bush says we are not leaving Iraq. He said all leaders in Washington want to protect the country. I want to know what he is drinking.

What a jack ass, I cringe listening to our President try to get out a coherent sentence. Ya, throw the Dems some more momentum for us to get out of Iraq today.

I guess Pelosi told Bush this morning that Rummy has to go! Or maybe Nancy waltzed into Rummy's office and told him "You're outta here!"
[grim humor for a gray day]...

You're hoping against hope. It is.

No. If the War On Terror had nothing more than Bush and Rumsfeld, we couldn't have even launched it let alone sustain it.
It's not over. Not by any means.
It's about policy, not personalities. This is national security. The Dims don't have the votes to gut it. Given their situation with their new Dims, they may be forced to increase funding and troop levels to Iraq. In fact, I think it's likely.

The dims have two years to mucky up the works and it will get blamed on Bush. Nasty business.

But I see that the powers that be still have one of 'the good old boys' to step in.

Take a break people...ever hear of Simon Cameron? He might have done a good job running the peacetime military, but Rummy was undistinguished as a wartime SECDEF! He needed to fall on the sword for the good of the country...I just wish he'd done it back in 2000; perhaps today wouldn't have been so bleak!
